Wherever you're coming from, flying can be a seamless experience if you've planned ahead. We've made a list of handy hints that will help get your Omu escape started on the right foot. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Flying can be a comfortable experience if you carry the right stuff. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a fresh set of clothes and something to read. Secondly, make room in your hand luggage for your electronic gadgets, chargers, any daily medications and maybe a proper neck pillow too. Lastly, don't forget to take your passport, travel docs and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Double-check that you don't have a sharp object hiding in the bottom of your carry-on luggage. Other prohibited items include flammable or explosive products, such as bleach and fuel, and gels and liquids in containers with a capacity of more than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres).

What to wear on a flight:

• Comfort should be your priority when choosing what to wear on your flight. Loose, breathable clothing is a sensible option, as are flat, closed-toe shoes.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged inactivity, can be a risk on long-haul flights. Make a point of walking around the cabin or do some gentle exercises in your seat to promote better circulation.

• Have your boarding pass and passport handy. They'll be the first things you'll be asked for by security.
• Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your belt, jacket, keys and other small items, like your earphones, will need to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them as your turn draws near.
• For just a few moments, you'll have to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, tablet and any other electronic devices must also be sent through the scanner.
• Travelling with your favourite cologne or perfume? Not a problem. As long as it's in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a clear zip-lock bag, you can keep it with you in your carry-on luggage.
• The right choice of footwear can save you several precious minutes. Boots are often required to be removed and separately scanned. Slip-on shoes usually aren't.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed on board.
