• A plane ride can be a cruisy experience if you take the right stuff. Sharp objects, like your precious Swiss Army knife, and products which are flammable or explosive, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and gasoline, are also banned.

What to wear on a flight:

• The aisles of an airplane are no place for a fashion parade. Layer your clothing and pick shoes that are flat and easy to take on and off.
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It results from blood clots forming due to poor circulation, so do some gentle leg and foot exercises in your seat and consider wearing compression socks.

• Have your travel documents and passport easily accessible. They're the first items you'll be asked for by airport security.
• After that, both you and your carry-on luggage must be X-rayed. To speed things up, remove anything that is likely to set the alarm off. Items like your belt, coat and headphones need to go through the machine.
• All electronic gadgets, including your phone and laptop, will also need to be separately scanned.
• Can't travel without your favourite hand and nail cream? As long as the volume is no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and it's stored in a zip-lock bag, you're permitted to bring it with you in your carry-on luggage.
• It's also possible you'll be asked to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a good idea.
• Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
