• Caused by sustained periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot condition that can affect some passengers during long-haul flights. Reduce the risks by drinking water, keeping your feet and legs moving and wearing compression socks or tights.

The trick is to be organised before you get to the security gate. That way, you'll be boarding that plane to West Point before you know it. Follow these helpful tips and get your holiday off to a terrific start:

• Have your ID and boarding pass within easy reach. They're the first items you'll be asked to show at security.
