The Guinea Pig experience
We were the guinea pig Vrbo renters for this owner. From needing to drive 20 minutes north to try to arrange getting our room key from a Realtor just to get into the unit, to the smell of the fact that they had literally purchased a condo "as is" with everything left behind. It was obvious by the smell of the condo and the belongings left behind that an elderly couple had lived there. The items behind the cabinet doors were not only mismatched and uncertain how long it had been since they were cleaned, the cabinet drawers and doors were sticky and dirty. The smell from old and opened products under the kitchen sink was overwhelming. The coffee pot was disgusting. The dresser drawers were still full of very old linens, very dirty pillows, random combs, collections, old wall pictures, etc.....there was not a place to even think about emptying a suitcase. Mind you, it is required to rent for 30 days, not just an overnight stay, so being able to use the dressers was expected. The closets were full of old beach chairs, cleaning supplies, open and used sunscreen, soaps, lotions. There was no room to be able to hang clothes. Bathroom drawers had old hair pins and a pile of old hair dryers and curling irons. The "linen closet" had linens that were basically unfolded, unclean and had obviously been there for years and years. Towels were tossed on the floor.
