The welcome was perfect from very friendly staff and I slep well and is in a good location.The hotel looks as if its been a long time since any attention was given to the decor, our room looked very tired and the bathroom was not as clean as it could have been. The continental breakfast was meagre to say the least, cereal, toast, old fruit, and amused many other guests. Not good value for the money.

Firstly I need to say that the staff at this property were brilliant- friendly, polite and very helpful. Breakfast was basic but fine. The location for Halifax was great- just a very brief walk from the Piece Hall, with the bus station and cheap parking on the doorstep. But my room was in a poor state, with a stained carpet, pen graffiti on the wooden furniture, and electric cables pinned down with gaffer tape. The electronic door handle was loose which gave me no confidence that the room was locked or secure. I paid very little so it was fine for the price, but do not expect luxury!

Simply put, do not stay here at any price. It is filthy. No hot water. Bathroom sink had only a cold tap. Toothpaste all over sink, tap and glass shelf. Dirty, stained, filthy carpets. Bony mattresses. Bathroom dirty. No one to check out. Hotel not manned. So bad, I would not risk eating Breakfast. Seriously concerned about bed bugs but if I've brought them home from The Wool Merchant, I will 100% take legal action against the owners.

Affordably good quality accommodation with fabulous service. From the initial welcome to the time we departed and throughout the stay, we received the most professional, efficient, polite and friendly service from everyone of the hotel’s team we encountered, with special mention to the awesome Simon. The affordable rooms within this historic building are clean and functional; above all, they are very clean and comfortable with modern facilities like free-view television and reliable hotel Wi-Fi. The bed was comfy with crisp linen atop good duvet and pillows all of which aided a good nights sleep (some rooms might be noisy given the proximity to a reasonably busy road). The en-suite bathroom was also spotlessly clean with good water pressure to the shower and soft towels, complemented by some small bottles of shampoo and conditioner. The free breakfast was adequate and welcome, with a basic hot and cold self service buffet selection The hotel is located on the edge of the town centre of Halifax just a ten-minute walk from the railway station and even less of an amble from the bus station, and the same distance to the Peace Hall, also very close to the town's retail and leisure attractions. A good value for money friendly hotel in a good location, I can highly recommend. The hotel has new owners and management.

We stayed in room 31 on the 5th floor.. no hot water at 5pm for a shower or a bath, cracked mirror in the bath room, severe smell of sewage in the bathroom .. burn marks on the sofa and curtains stains on the walls and floors .. couldn’t wait to get away spoilt a weekend to a gig locally.. guests leaving from room 29 also stated the safe needless to say will never return and expect some recompense from Expedia also for even having this on there site

The hotel is very handy for concerts at the Piece Hall and it is pretty reasonably priced. However, it is rather tired and has some very odd features - my double room had no waste bin either in the en suite or main room, the security lock on the inside of the door didn’t work and the bathroom basin tap (one of those you press on for the water) didn’t stay on long enough even for me to wash my hands - it also only seemed to have cold water. The shower head was a bodged repair and the pressure low. The room was very hot in the sun and the windows only open about two inches. Signposting is bizarre - the sheet we were given at checkin said breakfast was on the lower ground floor but not that the lift LG button took you to a staff area. We had to explore to find the stairs instead! Breakfast was included but was pretty sparse and low quality. Bar staff seemed untrained in, for example, how to pour beet. On the up side if you’re Spanish, there’s a translation in the lift of the many things you aren’t allowed to do in it.. Reception was closed till about 9am. Staff were friendly but clearly inexperienced and only one person seemed to be around in the morning. So, perfectly okay for one night if you have the ability to be amused by the oddities but not exactly a hotel I’d choose for more than one night,

Arrived at the Hotel, was left in reception for 10 minutes then handed a sheet of paper and a key card.. went to.. well where do you start, bathroom....sink was cracked.. no glass to have some water.. one of the taps had the end missing from it.. and the grout was dirty.. bedroom.. curtains were disgusting god knows what was on them.. all the grey surfaces were sticky to touch.. no chair to sit on in the room.. and finally the bottom sheet came of the mattress in the night.. OMG looked like someone has died and decomposed on it.. absolutely disgusting.. otherwise no complaints.. awful

Don't go off the pictures on the website It's like stepping in to a room in the 70s that's not been upgraded Furniture tired full of chips and scratched paint , chair flimsy and wobbly light fitting broke , pillows flatter than a pancake and housekeeping non-existent.

Heartily recommend

I was in Halifax for a work trip and stayed here while a colleague stayed at a different hotel which was about the same price. We had completely opposite experiences in terms of comfort and quality, and should either of us go to Halifax again, the wool merchant hotel is on top of the list of places to stay.
