Long after this imposing medieval fortress played a pivotal role in Dalmatia’s history, it was used as a filming location for Game of Thrones.

Sitting high on a rocky ridge in a hilltop village, Klis Fortress provides incredible views over nearby Split and the Adriatic Sea. Discover the 2,000-year-old history behind the formidable fortress, browse the military exhibits in the museum and enjoy unobstructed vistas from its high vantage point.

Climb to the top of the hill where the fort stands. You’ll soon see why this well-placed site has been a defensive stronghold for more than two millennia. It was initially settled by the Illyrians and then occupied by the Romans, with the current fort building dating back to the seventh century. It has a long and complex history, serving as a palace for Croatian royalty before coming under control of the Ottomans, the Venetians and the Holy Roman Empire.

On approach, try to spot the fortress on the hillside. It was built into the rocky mass and as such, it can be difficult to identify from a distance. Ascend the hill for a better look at the stony citadel, parts of which may look familiar, having appeared in the popular TV series, Game of Thrones.

Wander along cobbled pathways and look for timeworn cannons and ramparts, which act as reminders of this fort’s battle-filled past. This castle once looked out over the border between the Ottoman and Venetian Empires. Signage is rare, but the site itself is evocative so try to use your imagination.

Be sure to check out the exhibit inside the fortress with displays of armor, weaponry and various traditional military uniforms. Admire the views from various observation points. From this hilltop location, you can look out over Split, the Adriatic coast and the surrounding vineyards, almond trees and olives groves.

Be mindful of steep drop-offs and uneven surfaces while exploring. The fortress is open every day except Mondays and there is an entrance fee. To get to Klis Fortress, take the bus from Split. If driving, head north from Split. The journey will take about 20 minutes.
