Milwaukee City Hall

Milwaukee City Hall which includes interior views
Explore this Milwaukee landmark on an informative tour or simply appreciate its ornate Flemish Renaissance Revival architecture from the forecourt park.

Milwaukee City Hall is a remarkable civic structure in the heart of the city’s historic downtown. Unveiled in 1895 as the third-tallest building in the United States, the Milwaukee City Hall is a distinctive landmark in the cityscape for its soaring bell tower. Admire the building’s lavish architecture, which drew inspiration from local monumental buildings, as well as German and Flemish-style halls. Go on a tour of the National Historic Landmark to get a closer look at its ornate interiors and learn about its role in Milwaukee history.

Spend some time wandering around the perimeter of the 15-floor building, noting its architectural highlights. The building was designed by architect Henry C. Koch, who won the city’s design contest in 1891. Inspired by Flemish Renaissance designs, the building features stunning stonework and an ornately decorated tower that rises 353 feet (105 meters) into the sky. Gaze up to see the belfry, which contains an immense bell comprised of copper and tin from old church and fire station bells. The bell is named Solomon Juneau, after Milwaukee’s first mayor, and first chimed on New Year’s Eve, 1896.

Enter the city hall to check out the eight-story atrium in the building’s center and the extensive marble and mosaic flooring. Stop by the City Clerk’s Office to pick up a brochure that details the city hall’s restoration. Inquire about a guided tour and learn about the structure’s long history while you explore the office spaces and meeting rooms.

Be sure to save some time to enjoy views of the building from the leafy environs of Red Arrow Park. This spacious inner-city park is situated on Milwaukee City Hall’s northern side and is a pleasant spot to relax with a coffee.

Milwaukee City Hall is located in the city’s historic center, near the eastern bank of the Milwaukee River. Park in a nearby parking lot or make use of the city’s bus transit system, which serves the area. The city hall is closed on weekends. Tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis. While in the area, check out the surrounding theater and performing arts venues or enjoy a stroll along the river.
