Find some of the island’s unique flora and fauna as you trek through the trails and climb to mountaintops in this park. Relax with a family barbecue amid the woodlands.

Norfolk Island National Park encompasses some of the island’s most magnificent natural landscapes, including its tallest summits and outlying islands. You’ll find a wide selection of walking trails for every age and fitness level, as well as stunning viewpoints and scenic picnic spots. From groves of ancient tree ferns to coast-fringing pinewoods, there are amazing landscapes to explore in the national park.

One of the park’s most popular sections is the Mount Pitt summit. This grassy peak is easily accessible and presents a panorama of almost the entire island. Spot landmarks amid the pine-speckled hills and admire the varied coastline. Make the trek up to the island’s highest peak, Mount Bates, which near Mount Pitt.

Pick from a wide network of walking trails throughout the park. Make your way through some of the world’s tallest tree ferns or stroll beneath the fronds of lush palms. Breathe in the refreshing scent of pine forests and discover the natural beauty of the island’s coastal fringe. Check out the walk to Bird Rock and Elephant Rock for a glimpse at the island’s fascinating geology. You can see these natural landmarks from the Captain Cook Lookout, which presents a sweeping view across to Point Howe in the west. See the statue dedicated to the English explorer who reached Norfolk Island in 1774. The lookout also provides easy access to the Bridle Track.

The national park is a bird-watching hot spot. Look for seabirds circling over the crashing waves and peer up into the canopy to see the island’s diversity of forest birds.

Choose from several scenic spots, such as Mount Pitt and the Captain Cook Lookout, to enjoy a barbecue picnic in the national park. Both sites have public restrooms.

There are multiple entry points into the Norfolk Island National Park. The majority of the park is a short drive from Burnt Pine. Nepean Island and Phillip Island are only accessible by boat. The national park is free to visit at any time of the year. Pick up maps and brochures for the park from the Visitor Information Centre in Burnt Pine.
