This unique shipping container home on a lava field was an unforgettable experience! While the surrounding neighborhood lacked privacy & was not completely dark at night for optimal stargazing, the overall stay was still enjoyable & worthy of 5 stars for its originality & cool factor.

We stayed one night while visiting the volcano and it was awesome! The shipping container house was unique and cool and located on top of a recent lava flow. It was remote but easy to find and we had a great time!

We had a WONDERFUL stay here (family of 4, kids ages 15y and 11y). It was really really cool to be on the lava field, the house is simple yet well furnished, the beds were very comfortable, everything was very clean and well maintained. The walk to the ocean was fascinating through the new lava. It was very fun staying here and we would highly recommend it!

Really fun place to stay! accommodation was as expected. Amazing night sky and very interesting lava formations. Small suggestion - it would ben helpful to have information about if the tap water is drinkable or not. We didn't bring bottled water and probably should have.

I highly recommend this home on the lava! It is well-equipped, comfortable and has a wonderful view of the lava field and ocean. It is such a unique experience living off the grid on the lava, it is so relaxing. The area is remote, safe and peaceful. We cannot wait to book another trip and return to this property. The property manager was excellent and responsive.

This “house on the lava” is truly a fabulous experience! You and the stars and the lava rock can enjoy companionship! Our adult kids loved it. Photos on web site are true . outdoor photos cannot describe the lava setting. Super unique ! Bring your own drinking water. Everything else provided. We really enjoyed it!

This is true an awesome experience staying on the lava field. So serene and peaceful, very spiritual for some. Amazing views of the ocean once you walk across the lava field. Wish we had booked it longer to explore more. Container home is very well equipped for what you need. The “grumpy” neighbor actually had a very pleasant but brief conversation with my husband and son. Would recommend staying here for the experience!

All in all, a lovely stay in a peaceful setting. Bit strange description of the "grumpy neighbor"; we did not see him so no comments from our side. The house was clean and fully equipped. In the dark this house is difficult to find though. Hike to the lava cliffs is very nice though!

As the other reviewers have said, staying at the lava house is truly other-wordly. Strolling the lava fields, taking in the unique lava flow formations, and admiring the ocean brought a sense of wonder and awe. The house is also well appointed and as advertised. Pretty sweet to be off grid, too. There are some loud noises from the water pump that are a bit louder for those in the master bedroom.

Me and the kids had an awesome 5 day pre- holiday reunion. We drove all over the island. Went out for karaoke, rode a submarine, swam at black and green sand beaches, snorkeled with a sea turtle, ate poke and went to farmers market and some of us got tattooed. We had sunshine, thunderstorms, a windstorm, but mostly calm and never below 65 ° F at night in the middle of December.

Property was easy to find, even in the dark. We were respectful of property lines and had no trouble with neighbors. You will be truly off the beaten path, so plan accordingly. But it was worth it for our family to spend a short time on the lava flows. We will probably never get another opportunity like this again! Container home is starting to show a little wear, but still quite comfortable all things considered.

We stayed with our kids (6,8) for 4 nights. We deliberately chose this location as we visited this region in 2009 when the Kilauea lava was flowing. To stay on top of the old lava flow was a special feature to show the kids. The location is very remote, the next shops a 15min drive away. A few more houses have been set up around the property, meaning we never had an encounter with the ‘grumpy neighbour’. The path over the lava field is quite easy to follow and was an interesting activity for the kids. The house had everything we needed and was nicely decorated. We didnt have any issues with water or electricity supply, the second unit was vacant during our stay. We didnt mind the 2 hour drive to/from the west coast, at times meaning to arrive back in the house at midnight but that’s something to consider when planning activities around the island. We’d happily stay at this truly unique home on the lava again.

This location is as advertised, however, be aware, it is WAY out there. The directions given at checkin are 100% accurate and esy to follow. The only real negative is that the "cranky neighbor" tends to dominate the correspondence and the signage on site. We had no issues with him, and did enjoy our stay, but the looming threat is a bit much.

The lava flow container home was very cool and exactly as advertised. We planned to arrive early in the afternoon but got delayed at the volcano and didn’t arrive until right at sunset. I do not recommend arriving at night because it would be much harder to find. However, with the owner’s instructions, it was a piece of cake. We arrived late and left early the next morning so we didn’t have time to explore the lava flow…maybe next time. The beds and pillows were soft and the only improvement I would recommend would be an electrical outlet in the bathroom. Otherwise perfect. Thanks for hosting us.

We loved our stay. It’s such a unique place and the whole area feels otherworldly. The place was clean and well equipped. It’s definitely off the beaten path and not particularly close to much, but this is exactly what we were looking for. The place is really well done. You probably won’t even realize you are off grid. The walk out to the cliffs was unreal. In fact, as far as hiking in and around lava, we thought it was much cooler than anything in the actual national park, plus we had the whole lava field to ourselves. Our family of four was grateful for the opportunity to have such a different experience. I also met the “grumpy” neighbor. He was a really nice guy that mostly just wanted to make sure people respected the area and were careful on the lava. We give home on the lava 5 stars.
