About this property
Peaceful off grid cabin retreat in Candy Kitchen NM near El Morro Natl Monument
Description The “Shangrila Cabin” is a wonderful “Off Grid” getaway. A place where you can unplug from the world, relax in natures beauty, peace and quiet. Where you can reacquaint with “You”. Get back to the basics and unplug. Being surrounded by nature, allows one to truly relax and enjoy the peaceful and beautiful surroundings. The cabin sits on a hill amongst tall Pine, Pinyon, Scrub Oaks and various species of Juniper trees. A peek through the trees shows distant rock formations and Mesas. Wildlife in the area consists of Elk, Deer, Coyote, Mountain Lion, Bobcat, Bear many bird species, Hummingbirds and much more. Relax outside and watch what may wonder by, both land and air. Star gaze the incredible night sky, where you can view the Milky Way, distant planets and millions of stars that light up the night sky. Take a walk amongst the tall trees and hear the quiet solitude the mountains provide.
The Space This approximately 300sft one room cabin has all the amenities one needs to escape the outside world. With a queen size bed in the main part and an additional queen in the loft for the kiddos to enjoy, it can sleep 4 comfortably. The kitchenette has an apartment size fridge, sink, a butane burner and all the kitchen essentials needed. The bathroom features a large walk in shower and toilet. The cabin being off grid has a large 700 gal outside tank that feeds to the indoor plumbing. The on-demand water heater gives all the hot water needed, instantly. We do ask guests to be water conscious. There is sufficient solar panels and batteries for all electrical needs, but we do ask that you still conserve. However for those multiple days when the sun doesn’t shine, a remote controlled back up generator can be used to charge the batteries. The heat source is provided by an in the wall propane heater, which works most effectively. There is a small yard for your fur babies to hang out in while you enjoy the cabin and its surroundings. We ask guests to not leave their pets unattended in the cabin or yard.
The interior of the cabin has all the creatures comforts a guest should need, with the exception of food. Some Toiletries are provided, along with various teas and coffees. A Roku Smart TV and a large variety of DVD’s are provided for cozy nights of viewing, along with several board and card games to play. All bedding, towels, blankets, pillows, dog bed and bowls and assorted soaps and shampoos. Instant coffee with creamer and a variety of teas are provided. A solar fan is provided for additional comfort, inside the cabin. A grill with a burner is provided for additional cooking opportunities. Enjoy sitting out under the covered porch while viewing the beautiful surroundings.
Guest Access Private access, Keypad entry with door code, Single Level with loft and extra queen bed.
Other Things of Note Sitting at approximately 7300 elevation, in the high desert mountains close to the Continental Divide, the weather can be unpredictable. The cabin is closed for the winters due to the extreme cold temps, heavy rains and snows received, that make the roads problematic. Spring temps will still bring cold nights in the 20’s to day temps ranging from the 60’s to 80’s with late snowfalls and spring rains. Summer temps can range from as low as the 40’s to the high 90’s. The rainy season usually starts in July and runs to September, making for muddy roads. So 4 wheel or all wheel drive may be recommended since the road to the cabin is dirt. We also recommend guests to bring layers of clothes (jackets, sweaters, etc) for increment weather conditions. We also recommend guests to arrive during daylight hours due to the remote location, wildlife and possible road conditions. Guests need to be aware that Cell service is spotty in the area. It is recommended to get food either in Grants or Gallup, since there is limited choices close by.
WIFI-We have Starlink service and it is on standby mode. With that there is limited service. You can text, make calls, check emails and do limited searching. If you wish to be able to stream movies or watch videos, you will need to pay a one time fee of $27.00 to turn on full internet access. This can be paid by cash or credit card (through Square) when checking in. You will need to notify us before your stay so we can turn on the access when you arrive.
RULES Due to being on solar there is no usage of a microwave and hair dryer. There is no outdoor fires allowed due to high fire danger in the area. A small ash can with sand is provided for cigarette butts. Do not leave butts on the ground. Absolutely NO SMOKING INSIDE THE CABIN
