Rustic and Peaceful

All the charm of a rustic site with the benefit of a hot shower and kitchen amenities. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the river, reading in the hammock, and morning coffee in the screened in porch. We read the reviews ahead of time and were aware of what to expect. Had a deer or moose (too dark to discern which) visit the island very early one morning and enjoyed watching the beaver in the evening. Fantastic location for a day trip to Copper Harbor or the Porcupine Mountains

Amazing again

Our second time at Republic Island and it was just as stunning and enjoyably as the first. This time we were able to bring our dog with us and I think it may have been the most fun that little pup has ever had. Can’t wait to return again!

The cabin description was 100% accurate and was everything we were looking for. Our group loved the canoes, the 3 seasons porch, outdoor fire pit, EVERYTHING! We will be back next September and plan to make this annual trip!

Fabulous weekend getaway!

What a perfect space to stay in while we were there for a wedding. It was very clean, safe, and plenty of places to explore nearby. The hosts were courteous and helpful to make sure our stay was pleasant. We wish we had more time to go to the Farmer’s Market close by while we were there and plan to visit again to do just that. Thanks Kevie and Rebecca!

Old fashioned family time

We absolutely loved staying here We didn't have video games for the kids so the kids had to make their own entertainment As a family we played games had actual conversations not through phones Just what was needed

Good times

Cute little cabin with picturesque views of the river. Great experience. Like camping but with less set up and modern conveniences. I think the dog had the most fun though.

Great memories

It was so serene having our own little island for a week. The kids spent hours fishing off the dock & boats, feeding our trail mix to the chipmunk friends they made & roasting marshmallows around the fire. Mom even got a nap in the hammock over looking the river. Dad got to show the kids how to filet the fish we caught for our dinner. Great memories!

Rustic Perfection

Our visit to Republic Island was everything we hoped for. Yes, it was rustic (we were prepared for that) and we had a great stay. Weather was quite cold during our visit but cabin was comfortable and we were even able to use the 3 season porch for a game of cribbage. Cara and Mark were available for questions/concerns. We had a great time and are looking forward to a visit (hopefully) next July. If you love the outdoors and are flexible THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE.

Private Island Heaven

Beautiful charming property. Wonderful communication with property management. Very clear instructions and directions which was much appreciated. Remote but a small town 10ish mins away if you need an essential. Docked pontoon waiting for you to captain yourself across the river to the island with the cabin on a hill. We loved the historic pictures on the fire place and learning about the property which is over 100 years old!!! We love history with our stays!!! The place was exactly as described!!! Beds were super comfortable with great bedding. Kitchen was great to cook in while the family played cards in the screened porch area. 110% will be coming back

Rustic little cabin

It is a neat little historic cabin. Everything was small but comfortable. Spent most of our time in the screen porch, nice addition. Lugging gear up and down the hills took a bit of effort, but earned a beer after that. I liked the hammock out on the point. Pretty nice views from up and down the river. Having the internet allowed us to keep tabs on storm fronts. Radar let us know good times to light the grill. Grilled out lunch and dinner every day. Almost used the whole 18 lb bag. After our week on the island, we would go back and would recommend it to others.

Incredible, isolated cabin in the middle of the woods

We had an absolutely amazing time staying at the Republic Island cabin. I agree with the owner that if you are not up for a semi-rustic experience, this rental is probably not for you. That said, the cabin was exceptionally well put together. We enjoyed the cool October nights cuddled next to the crackling fireplace amidst the seclusion of the north woods. It has all the basics for a stay, and although you definitely feel pretty isolated, it’s an easy boat ride across the river and back to civilization. This was definitely one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed, from the original wood logs of the 1800s cabin to the lovely heated tile floors in the bathroom to the views of the Michigamme river flowing by out of every room. We will absolutely be returning here in the future!

great place

It was great except for the cleanliness. Fridge and microwave were dirty as were the floors which looked like they were not swept since the last guests. Shower wouldn't drain and when I lifted wooden platform I I couldn't see the holes in the drain as they were covered in a bunch of hair. No firewood on island or land. They brought some the next day but it was green poplar and wouldn't burn.

Relaxing week on the Michigamme River

From the moment we pulled up to the dock and looked up the hill at the beautiful, rustic cabin I knew we were going to have an amazing time! Eagles soaring from the immense pine tree, geese and sandhill cranes calling and the occasional fish flop in the water are about all the neighbors you've got out here on the secluded island. There's a beautiful view from all around the island. Inside the cabin was so charming and I loved the real wood everywhere, the rooms are great, windows all over, the screened in porch was a great place to relax. They had firewood on the island which was convenient, the firepit was great for ambiance and smores! The kitchen has anything you'd need to cook and they have a roku tv but we didn't even need it. We had a blast kayaking down the river and watching the sunset over the water was breathtaking. I would recommend this vacation property to anyone! It never disappointed and was always fun, for me, my two boys and our dog!

All around very dirty, bottom of toilet filthy, bottom of stove where lids to pans are filthy , behi

Needs to be clean it’s a dirty rental . When you charge for a cleaning fee it needs to be clean. A lot of things don’t work in cabin , heat is very important factor there , bedrooms were freezing in October , tv went out , bedroom with fireplace did not work , tv went out ,a lot of openings in the walls drafts all over , needs a lot of tlc.

Whaaah - Don't make me leave/ I want to go back!!

What a delightful cabin - very rustic and homey. I don't think there is anything they forgot to put in this cabin. Felt right at home. The quirks of staying in a historic cabin made it so fun and full of character. It was very quiet - enjoyed the downtime. (Watch out for those mosquitoes though - there is a reason they're called the "state bird" - mean little buggars!) If you want 4 start luxury w/ a pool and someone to keep you entertained- don't come here. But if you enjoy playing games and connecting w/ your family, toodling about on a river that is so calm you think you're on a lake, cooking meals at home and roasting marshmallows, exploring the UP and pretending (if only for a minute) that you're a "Youper" - then this is paradise!! I've already recommended this place to others - run, don't walk - reserve your space now!!

Rustic and quiet

Staying on the island was unique and fun. The pontoon was a great way to get across the river without having to row! The chipmunks were cute and interesting to watch; one even snuck in when I opened the sliding glass door. One snake was spotted near the fire pit but quickly retreated to the woods. We also saw many geese and ducks. We enjoyed ourselves and understood that this place wasn’t for everyone but did give a lower rating for cleanliness and check in. The bathroom had a left over bar of dirty soap in the shower and when we arrived at 4:45pm no boats were at the dock… all were on the island with a gentleman who we believed worked for the rental management company. We had to wait about 10 mins before he noticed us standing on the dock. Floating on the river via the pontoon was the hi-light of the stay and the whole experience will be one we can look back on for many years to come.

Very Quiet and Relaxing

We have stayed at Republic Island twice now. It is very quite. There are only a handful of cabins on the river between the rapids and town and most of them appeared unoccupied while we were there. We caught fish (pike, smallmouth, rock bass, a couple of walleye and one very large perch). We saw the eagle. We saw a momma moose and her calf cross the bottom of the rapids one evening while fishing. The cabin is rustic and relatively comfortable. The kids were a bit disappointed that the paddle boat was not there this time. Maybe because it was early in the season. Also, I had brought my own canoe paddles just in case and I was glad I did because one of the cabins paddles appeared to have been left in the rain and lost all of its finish. If you want quiet and seclusion, this is the right place. We are avid campers and this appeals to us. This vacation is not like Disney World or Vegas. We are glad we found it and we plan on returning again in the future.

Front porch moldy, mice and chipmunks.

There was garbage...roofing other debris that has been left for a while around property, and the last occupants beer cans. dust and stuff around the beds and mouse poop. Woke up by the critters in the rafters, they make traps for critters that are safe to use around pets. broken paddles and stuff on the pontoon. The heat was not working properly used one of the electric heaters to heat living room. Had to do a hard clean on the egg grill as it was in bad shape with water in the bottom. (You're welcome) could be an awesome place with someone paying more attention to details. tried to use the electric grill was rusted and smelled like mouse poop when we tried to heat it up. other than that, we had some fun and caught some fish.

Fantasic Cabin

We actually were invited to go stay at this cabin with 2 friends of ours, and well we were like sure we have never been this far north. We live in IL. Looked cute and hidden away. We also were able to bring our dogs..which I might add LOVED it I was able to not worry about them just let them out the dog and on they went sniffing. I don't know what those grown evergreen's were but they just layed in them. We only stayed 3 nights after the 2nd night I wanted to stay longer but had to be back to work on Monday so sadly that was not going to happen. I have booked this place for just me and my husband for a week. We are looking forward to our stay. We want to stay longer so we can enjoy how peaceful it is and also maybe have time to explore around. We also went to an antique shop in town it was very nice and the guy there was very helpful We can not wait till our next stay and I am sure the dogs are looking forward to it as well. If you are looking for a place to enjoy peace and quite this is your place I say stay more then a weekend tho because you will not want to leave. Also there is a log in the cabin from the people who have stayed here it is very entertaining I sat and read that for a few hours.

A Week On a Private Island

The property was clean and well-maintained. Honestly, they thought of everything, right down to spices in the kitchen. Cara was super-friendly and helpful. The cabin was well appointed. Beds were comfy. Heated bathroom floor was a huge plus. We were able to bring our dog, who loved the trip, but has decided she isn't much into fishing. We saw a MOOSE from the jon boat, which was a rare treat. Also had the opportunity to view a doe and her fawn. Caught lots of fish, cooked and ate most of them. Water was pretty low, which is normal for the fall, so we weren't able to use the pontoon, but the jon boat worked just fine. We brought our own trolling motor and battery. If you aren't into rowing, consider it. Well worth the added effort. The listing was pretty accurate, so we knew what to expect. The information packet was helpful. I would recommend this property to any friend or relative who desires a true "get the heck away from everyone else" adventure. I would not recommend it to anyone with any mobility issues. We fished everyday. I am a fishing maniac. My husband isn't. But the location was great, so there were plenty of opportunities to take photos. The Island is located really close to a number of other areas. It was surprising how easy it was to get to Lake Michigamme, Houghton, Hancock, etc. We toured the Quincy Mine in Hancock. If you go, try Tony's steak house on US41. Great food. If you want a really nice, decently priced meal, I would highly recommend Mt. Shasta right outside of Michigamme. The food was excellent, as was the service. The place is very cozy, an 1800's log cabin. And it was the site of filming Anatomy of a Murder, with some interesting stories / pics on display. We will be back, and are also so impressed with the management we are looking forward to renting other properties they manage in Michigan. Could not be happier!!!
