As a family with two young kids, we were delighted by our experience.
It may not be for everyone - this is not the same as an experience at a large all-inclusive resort. Things are a little more relaxed and unpredictable, in terms of precisely which services will be available when, etc.
But I felt like both us and the kids got so much more out of it.
FDR has a lot going for it: unusually spacious (double) rooms inside non-generic little Spanish-style buildings; access to a beautiful neighbouring beach (alongside its small one); a waterslide where kids (and possibly adults) will happily spend hours; free boat rides; pretty tasty a la carte meals; a location near lots of good day-trip options.
But its charm is particularly a credit to its staff - not just the nannies, who may be a main selling point, but also the wonderfully warm folks around the resort, like the lifeguard who taught our 7-year-old how to snorkel, the boat captain who took us out to fish one morning, and the restaurant and bar staff we felt like we knew by the second time they served us. Possibly helped by its Jamaican ownership, it feels way less impersonal than any resort I've been to previously.
All this to say, we left with a lot of warm feelings and are eager to return.
