  • Bellefontaine Cemetery is a nonprofit, non-denominational cemetery and arboretum located in St. Louis, Missouri. Founded in 1849 as a rural cemetery, Bellefontaine is home to a number of architecturally significant monuments and mausoleums such as the Louis Sullivan-designed Wainwright Tomb, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery contains 314 acres of land and over 87,000 graves, including those of William Clark, Adolphus Busch, Thomas Hart Benton, and William S. Burroughs. Many Union and Confederatesoldiers from the American Civil War are buried at Bellefontaine, as well as numerous local and state politicians. As of 2012 over 87,000 people have been buried at Bellefontaine Cemetery, and approximately 100 new burials take place each year. Bellefontaine remains a non-profit, non-denominational cemetery, and still holds over 100 acres of open, unused land. Some of this extra land has recently been converted into prairie and woodland. Bellefontaine contains over 14 miles of paved roads and, as an accredited arboretum, is home to over 180 species of trees and shrubs. A new lakeside garden and columbarium were completed in 2010, and other major landscaping projects are planned or in progress. The cemetery contains the graves of many prominent pioneers to the West, as well as businessmen, politicians, and generals who remain significant figures in the history of St. Louis and the United States. The oldest graves in the cemetery are located on pioneer Edward Hempstead’s family lot and date as far back as 1816. Many of the wealthiest families at Bellefontaine are interred in ornate mausoleums which overlook the Mississippi River and draw from Classical, Romanesque, Gothic, and Egyptian architectural styles. Among the most notable mausoleums in the cemetery are: the Wainwright Tomb, designed for Charlotte Dickson Wainwright by the famed Chicago school architect Louis Sullivan in 1892; the Busch Mausoleum, designed for Adolphus Busch and Lilly Anheuser by Barnett, Haynes & Barnett in 1915; and the Brown Brothers Mausoleums, designed in 1910 by Isaac Taylor and in 1928 by Mauran, Russell and Crowell. There are also a number of large family plots in the cemetery, many of which are marked by tall obelisk monuments with elaborate bases. Guided tours of the cemetery’s main historical and architectural highlights are available and are open to the public. A positive vibe

Great place to stay. The place was clean. The host was amazing. The inside was beautiful. Love the fact that there was a pool table and other activities to do in the house while staying there. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone and would stay again.

Sisters' weekend

Main floor was nice and had everything we needed two big beds, kitchen and bathroom, but there were 2 other bedrooms, one upstairs and one in the basement with lots of big screen tvs around the house. Host was very prompt with any questions. Also, the host had paper towels,extra toilet paper, a box of trashbags and lots of little extras so we didn't have to run to the store.

Gentrified home

This VRBO is in an area undergoing gentrification. Pros: The beds were comfy, good location for getting around but near unrestored area, nicely furnished with lots of tv's. Nice basement rec area. Good HVAC.Cons: We constantly had a hard time using the digital entry lock as it repeatedly went blank or didn't show all of the numbers. It may need a new battery? There were lights that didn't have any bulbs. The smoke alarm in the living room constantly beeped as it needed a new battery. The glass kitchen surface unit needed a cleaning as it was greasy and the sink faucet handle was loose and unusable. The coffee machine needed cleaning. The bathroom soap dispenser was empty. Closets need hangers. Bed spread was torn, as was on part of the bottom sheet.An information sheet would have been helpful with the Wi-Fi as we needed to contact the host.

No shopping No activities in close area All Bedding in the two bedrooms on the main level were dirty. Had to wash and dry it all before bed. Not located in a Good Neighborhood. House and furnishings weren't clean but it was decorated nice

Affordable and Convenient

This house has plenty of room, the furnishings are nice, and it is in a location where everything seems to be 15 or 20 minutes away at most. Definitely will come back.

Terrible place

The outside property was horrible. There was a car at the property beside this one that had all its windows broken or shot out. Almost every house in the neighborhood had boarded windows. People walking the street that were obviously on drugs. Keypad didn’t work. Smelled like weed inside. My sister, daughter, and I left and got a hotel. Explained to host we didn’t feel safe. Do not book. Won’t get a refund either if you show up and don’t feel safe.
