Stone Mountain Park

Stone Mountain Park showing outdoor art
Nature trails and theme park attractions surround the world’s largest piece of exposed granite, just outside the city.

Stone Mountain Park is an entertainment and recreation area surrounding the world’s largest piece of exposed granite. Throughout the park’s 3,200 acres (1,295 hectares) you’ll find walking trails, historical exhibits, playgrounds and leisure activities. There are also restaurants, shops, two hotels and a campground.

The granite mountain rises 1,686 feet (514 meters) above sea level. Ride the high-speed cable car to the top. On the way, view larger-than-life carvings of three Civil War figures: Jefferson Davis, Robert Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. This impressive Confederate Memorial Carving covers three acres on the side of the mountain.

If you’re up for some exercise, take the one-mile (1.6-kilometer) hiking trail to the top of the mountain. This trail is appropriate for most fitness levels, but can be slippery when wet. There are restrooms and a snack bar at the top of the mountain for a respite before heading back down.

There are 15 miles (24 kilometers) of walking trails around the park to suit a leisurely stroll or more strenuous day-hike. For example, the five-mile (eight-kilometer) Cherokee Trail winds through through the woods around the base of the mountain. The Woodland Trail and Meadow Trails each offer a one-mile walk into a habitat for lovely birds including the white-breasted nuthatch, eastern bluebird and northern cardinal.

Around the mountain there are a wide variety of activities for the entire family, including rock-climbing walls, miniature golf and a 4-D theater. Visit a recreation of a 19th-century town and farmyard or ride on a five-mile (eight-kilometer) scenic railroad around the base of the mountain. Kids will enjoy the Great Barn, an indoor playground for children aged five to 12.

An Adventure Pass gives you all-day access to the scenic trails, Great Barn, train and cable rides, and a slew of other activities. During the summer, stick around for the nightly laser and fireworks display that lights up the mountain.

The park is about a half-hour drive northeast of Atlanta and is open year-round.
