  • The Rio Grande River winds 12 miles down Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, Texas. When the water is high you can come down the 1,500 foot walled canyon. With less water flowing, guides take you 3 to 4 miles up the canyon with some spots having to portage. But take it all in stride because the views are breathtaking. I recommend Big Bend River Tours. You might get lucky and have the guides that take you a half mile up a side canyon. An excellent day excursion in the out of the way national park.

We hiked further than the 0.7 mile indicated on the signage, and ended up scooting and scrambling up the most interesting narrow and smooth chutes. We heard the song of the elusive canyon wren, too. Great Views!

Loved our stay at Fossil Knob Ridge Cinnabar house! Property was clean and well maintained. It is quite remote and a bit difficult to get to, but once you are there, the view makes it all worthwhile. The recommendations for things to do and places to eat were great as well. We had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend this property to other travelers!

Peaceful and quiet, this place was amazing. It was exactly what my family and I needed. I could not recommend d this place enough. It has all the necessities and communication was great. If you need a comfy place to stay after Big Bend and stargaze at night then this is your place.

Peaceful & Scenic Retreat

The property is perfect. Close proximity to Terlingua, Big Bend National Park, Lajitas and Big Bend Ranch State Park. The hosts had the place well stocked with everything you need (bbq grill included). Perfect spot for stargazing. If I could recommend one thing to bring, maybe a hammock or an outdoor chair that leans hack to give you a better view of the stars. I absolutely plan on staying here again. Super comfy beds and AC go a long way in the desert!!!

Trip to Terlingua and Big Bend NP

Fossil Knob Ridge was the perfect home base for exploring Big Bend National Park. We loved being so close to the park and the town of Terlingua. The property had everything we needed and more, including amazing views from every window, comfortable beds, fast Wi-Fi, a fully stocked kitchen, a cute outdoor seating area for star gazing at night, the list goes on! Daryl and Janet were great hosts, and they made us feel welcome and comfortable as soon as we arrived. Easily one of our best trips ever - we can't wait to come back!

Stargazing Sanctuary

This peaceful property was the perfect home base of our Big Bend adventure. The beds were cozy and the views were beautiful. The terrain is a little rough getting to the house, but it was so worth it. The wind was intense our first night and you could really hear it whipping through the night, but the next two nights were much calmer. We were able to experience a gorgeous full moon while we were there, too. It was a great time!! The home was beautiful and well stocked. It had everything we needed. Thank you!

Wonderful stay; excellent views night/day. Dark skies with Stars and Milky Way to the horizon, QUIET! Property is up to date and clean modern. Comfortable for 4 adults. Road...rocky and a little rough, but ok if you take it Slow. Worth the trip and only 10-15 min from Terlingua. Owners/caretakers very good.

Exactly as described and a wonderful location

My wife and I stayed here for 6 nights while exploring Big Bend National Park and the surrounding areas. Everything was perfect. I particularly loved the secluded area combined with modern amenities. We experienced very warm days and nights below freezing and the rental home was able to handle both of those scenarios well. We used the toaster, coffee maker, oven, microwave and propane grill and all worked flawlessly. The bathroom was nicely finished and functional as well. Beds were super comfortable with gorgeous views every evening and morning out of the picture windows. We also used the chiminea for nightly camp fires. Overall, a great experience and perfect accomodations for our week long stay.

Everything, starting from the initial email from the host with all the important information before the trip, and to the checkout process went smoothly and left a very pleasant impression. The house itself is remote from the crowded areas, and faces the great desert landscape from all the windows. It is spacious enough, has all the necessities in the kitchen and bathroom and equipped with a very nice patio, with a fi tree pit and a gas grill. Communication with the hosts was a pleasure. We can recommend this stay to everyone and will be returning next year.

My bestie and I were on a girl's hiking trip and stayed in the Cinnabar container. This was my first time staying in a container and I was not disappointed. The dark starry nights were amazing, and the location of the container brought endless views of the surrounding terrain and mountains in the background. There was plenty of room with the two king size beds, sitting area and a kitchen and bathroom complete with everything you may need. I would highly recommend staying in this container unit. The only thing I wish I would have known is that the bedroom shades are completely see-through and only provide shade from the sun and not for privacy (so change in the bathroom, not the bedroom).

Homey Feel in the desert

My son and I really enjoyed our time here. I felt like the property owners go out of their way to make sure you feel at home. Even reached out via email while we were there which I thought was a very nice touch. Overall I will defiantly come back next time in the area. very clean and modern.

Privacy and views for lightyears

Fossil Knob Ridge is a great place to get away. The containers are clean and well decorated. Great views of the mountains by day, and breathtaking dark sky views of the Milkyway by night. The owners give you fair warning about the rugged drive up the hill, but it’s well worth all the bumps when you get there.

Comfortable & Relaxing

The modern house made it fun and had all the comforts of home. It was clean and the bed was comfortable, which was needed after long days of hiking and kayaking in Big Bend! It was so quiet out on the back patio with a fire every night. Memories made and a great stay!!!

Great view and location

We were here for a week and loved the place. The view of the area and for sunsets and moon rise is spectacular. It is very private and quiet. The location to both the National and state parks is nice. The little house is comfortable and has everything you need for your stay.

Short but sweet

Delightful two nights at Fossil Knob Ridge. Property was exactly as advertised - modern, clean, and the perfect Terlingua Ghost Town location. No issues and check n-out was a breeze. Sunrises, sunsets and star gazing were amazing - relaxing and inspiring at the same time. I'd note there are 4 of these units at the same location - but they are oriented for maximum privacy. If you do want to make a fire, bring wood and a fire starter. We'll be back.

Another great stay!

We spent our second x-mas at Fossil Knob Ridge, this year in the 248 house. Everything you need is here for a relaxing evening after a day exploring the Big Bend Region. We would highly recommend staying at Fossil Knob Ridge.

Out of this world

Terlingua is very weird town. You should visit. This is one of four amazing container homes perched on a ridge above Terlingua Ghost Town. The little homes are a work of art, and the property managers have thought everything. I stay at a lot of vrbo properties, and this one was one of the best prepared I have ever stayed in Waking up with the the view is fantastic. Cocktails and BBQing on the little patio at sunset. Sitting around the fire in evening. And star gazing into wee hours. You won't want to leave.

Amazing and beautifully remote

Cant say enough about this beautiful place. Make sure you feel comfortable on unimproved road up and get ready to watch sunrises over the mountains with your coffee.

Stunning and private

This amazing property makes you feel like you are all alone on the top of the world which is exactly what we wanted. Beds very comfy and the layout is perfect. I will be back and would recommend to anyone!!
