I was hoping, based on Expedia reviews, that this was going to be an affordable pleasant stay. The room smelled from a cheap cleaner and the appointments including the bedding the floor and other items were excessively cheap. It was noisier than expected to with hearing cars on the road right outside. While I understand having one person, perhaps the proprietor(?), working the place all day and night the person was not very friendly and up charge me for using a credit card. Really? At a hotel? Finally the bed headed cheap metal frame that squeaked a lot.

First, if you want all the extra amenities and fancy décor that you get at some of those chain hotels, then this is not the place for you. But if you want a simple room that is clean and has everything you really need, at a good price, and is close to downtown Sylva, then this is a great place. It is an old roadside motel that is definitely basic in its design. But it was very clean and everything in the room worked. Which is better than I can say about the last VRBO I stayed at. Its is about a block from downtown Sylva and definitely walkable. The floors are all ceramic tile even in the bedroom area which means you know that it is clean, unlike the carpets at a lot of those "fancy" hotels. The bed was very comfortable and the sheets were good quality and again, clean. The back of the motel faces a beautiful little creek and the rear window opens so you can hear the water running. We enjoyed it and liked the location so much that we have made another reservation for next month and cancelled the place we had reserved in Cherokee.

A little intimidating at first but past the first impressions, the property was everything that you need. Clean room, great front staff, the key to the door worked every time, hot shower water, all was fantastic.

The location was great, practically in the middle of downtown. The absolute best part however was the very sweet man running the place. We were very late arriving, so he called us to make sure we were still coming and then waited up for us to nearly 1 in the morning! REALLY sweet.

It is an old school roadside motel. The current owners have done a great job renovating it. Great value. The rooms are on the small side but that is just due to the age of the place.

Made reservation online. When making reservation it stated only one room left. Room was for two beds and total cost with tax was to be $264. When I checked in manager asked if I would take room with one bed. I said I would since I was traveling alone. Manager ran processed my credit card and put my things in room. I noticed I forgot to request receipt, so I walked back to office get one. I noticed then that I was charged $275 instead of $264. I also asked if room with one bed was less expensive than room with two and he said it was. I asked why did he process my credit card at two bed rate and then inquire if I would take room with one bed (plus $11 dollars over online reservation request). He then asked if I wanted room with two beds. I told him to forget it because I had already moved my things into room with one bed.

I didn’t like that I paid by debit card and I was charged a convenience fee. That should only be for credit cards. On the website, it didn’t mention anything about a convenience fee. If you’re going to charge me to pay with a card, I’d rather pay online to bypass the charge. I don’t want to unnecessarily spend more out than I have to.

The first thing was I go to try and shower and the water comes out black, yes black. Then the cockroach that welcomed me was great. But the icing on the cake was the bed bugs. I was woken up by something biting me, so I pulled back the sheets and yup there were about a dozen bed bugs. I will NEVER stay here again.

The Economy Inn is located next to the Tuckaseegee River and a short walk from downtown Sylva. For that alone, this place is worth it. Yes, it shows its age, and yes you can tell they’ve done basic upgrades which make it nice, but it still is an outdated hotel. Regardless, everything worked, the water pressure is great and you are literally, a stones throw from the town where there is dining, entertainment and history. I’d definitely stay again if I was in the area.
