If you fly into San Jose, Costa Rica, and have time for a day trip, the Arenal Volcano and the attractions around it are worth the time. There is also a volcano near Turrialba that has been active lately, which is a little closer, but has none of the attractions. I have friends who live in the Turrialba area who have faced some uncertain days recently.

"My partner and I booked this property however when we arrived at 7pm, there was a large gate blocking the entrance and no one was there. We tried and tried to call and message the property and never received a response. La Fortuna is somewhat out in the country without many on the spot lodging options. "Wow! What a wonderful property, we did not want to leave. So comfortable and luxurious, with beautiful verandah and an outside bathtub and shower. Our teenagers loved it too, gorgeous pool area and comfortable rooms and great kitchen. We also so enjoyed viewing toucans, humming birds and other wildlife right from our porch. Good WiFi and netflix etc. Laundry also done for us. Overall a brilliant stay!"
