This was a ryokan/modern room hybrid, but more on the modern side. Very quiet and comfortable. Everything was clean and well maintained. The location is great and the neighborhood is awesome. It is not right next to anything, but is close to a lot of things. We had a wonderful stay here. Small room, but very convenient and comfortable. Thank you Machiya Kamiumea for a lovely experience.

lovely and quiet

lovely place to stay. very quiet area close to transport links.traditional look and very comfy beds. bath was outstanding. facilities were excellent including washing machine. nice tea and coffee to make.

This hotel is a must

We loved our stay at this hotel. It was beautiful and very clean. Its a mix between old school Machiya and a hotel. It was easy to get access to and the staff was very helpful. If I would go back to Kyoto I would absolutely stay at this hotel again. 10/10 I cant recommend this enough!!

Great if you want to experience traditional style Japanese accommodation. Not much around close-by in terms of dining or public transport. Also if you are tall you’ll be dodging door frames 😊

The property is very quiet and relaxing and has a washing machine and dryer that guests can use for free. The room was spacious and clean. The only downside of the room was that the beds were small and hard. The hotel is also not easily accessible by train and you need to be okay with taking buses, taxis, or walking 10-15 mins to a train station. On a positive note, the check in facility is next to Kyoto Station and you drop off your bags there for delivery to your room. All in all, we enjoyed the hotel very much, and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again the next time we're in Kyoto.

Lovely warm welcome when we checked in. Dropped our bags off at 10am, check in wasn’t until 3pm which was fine. We went around Kyoto until check in as we wanted to freshen up etc, they offer luggage delivery included in the stay however we rang at 4:30 as still no luggage and were told it could be any time from then and 7pm. Rang again at 5 and thankfully it arrived just after 5:30. Lovely little room in a lovely house however the communal area was a bit sad. Misleading photos. Use of a washing machine however most the time it was used. Location was okay but not near much for food. Check out was super easy. Thanks

Quaint Kyoto local stay

This place was very quaint and right in the heart of the neighborhood! You really feel like you are one of the locals. There is a coffee shop nearby called Ichikagawa that has lovely breakfast. Lawsons is also nearby for your convenience store needs. The only downside to this location is it is far from the subway. We had to take taxi a lot. The heated floors and toiletry takeaway bags were nice! The pillows were comfy and I am usually picky with pillows (it wasn’t too bulky or too soft). The robes were a fun bonus for taking a typical Japanese tourist picture. They also provide umbrellas if you forgot yours and need to borrow. Great added touch since it rains a lot! The biggest issue was whenever guests enter the main door, when it is shut, it is a very loud bang sound. We stayed in the room right next to the main entrance. So I had to sleep with earplugs to block out the noise.

We loved our stay. It was comfortable and spacious and we wish we could have stayed longer. Check-in and out were very easy. It was very clean and so beautiful. The area is a little more out of the way than it appears so don’t expect to use this location as a hub for sightseeing, especially because Kyoto’s transit system isn’t as robust. That being said, you won’t really want to leave the room.

Under-Delivered Over-Promised

Location: 8/10 Communication:10/10 Comfort: 5/10 Value: 5/10 We were really looking forward to our stay at Macha, especially after a hectic week in Tokyo we really wanted a place that was zen and allow us to unwind for a bit. Unfortunately our expectations were not met We were given a room on the ground floor, and for the next three days and nights had relentless noise from above us, with heaving stomping, dragging of items and things rolling on the floor. The noise made it difficult to sleep, and was not we were expecting at all. Also two of our windows had the blinds/curtains removed and were damaged, so we’re flooded with light at night. When we complained to the hotel, they offered to move us to another hotel in the city at 2am - which was obviously not an option for us While the communication was really good, this was not the experience in Kyoto we were hoping for, especially given the very high per night price We ended up booking another place which was a traditional Ryokan for our last two nights in Kyoto and were so grateful we did as the experience really was soo much more relaxing and comfortable. I believe this inn could be a wonderful experience for many but it will very much depend on the room and whether they have fixed the issues we experienced Kyoto is a beautiful city with soo much to do, see and experience - snd the people are just wonderful x

Das Gebäude und das Zimmer sind sehr schön und liebevoll landestypisch eingerichtet. Einziger Nachteil ist hierbei allerdings, dass alles sehr hellhörig ist. Wir hatten Zimmer 101 im Erdgeschoss direkt neben der Haustür, wo man jedes Kommen und Gehen der anderen Gäste sehr deutlich gehört hat. Abgesehen davon aber eine wirklich schöne Unterkunft in guter Lage. Auch das Personal war sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Wenn einen die Hellhörigkeit nicht stört, ist es definitiv eine sehr empfehlenswerte Unterkunft.
