We have been renting cabins for the holidays with Smoky Mountain Retreat for 20 years now. This was our 3rd stay at Wings of Dawn. Our prior stay here was in November of 2018. Apparently the home was sold since then and has a new owner. The difference was evident in that there was less in the way of decor. It just felt different, and less than. This was the first time we spent Christmas in Maggie Valley. We typically come for the week of Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, we had several issues during our stay this time. The dishwasher did not work, and although eventually repaired, we had no use of it for 1/2 the stay. The ice/water dispenser on the fridge did not work and was never repaired during our stay. The indoor gas fireplace stoped working after the 2nd day of our stay and required a part that was not available, so we were unable to use it again. Our stay was for 8 nights and we were only able to light it for 2 of those days. This was especially disappointing as it was Christmas, and it’s one of the main features and draws to renting a mountain cabin for the holidays. There was no propane in the tank for the BBQ and once reported to management, they did send someone, but the tank delivered was not full. The condition of the BBQ is extremely concerning. The flame tamers are all rusted out which caused the flames to uncontrollably shoot upward. The BBQ was filthy and I would recommend replacing the whole thing. Management was very professional, and responsive. I understand they can only do so much. I would recommend that the owners make the investment in new appliances and sprucing up the decor. Also, fully aware it’s their cabin to do as they wish, I would still recommend not placing personal family photos around the home. If I’m renting it and want it to feel like MY home for the rental period, seeing pictures of strangers all around ruins that perception. The view is still breathtaking from this home. It will always have that!
