Copious restaurants, diverse cultural delights and legendary nightlife make this former industrial hub one of New York City’s most exciting and fashionable areas.

With ultra-hip dining, art and shopping destinations, it is no wonder that the Meatpacking District is one of New York’s most buzzing areas. Step inside its famous nightclubs, however, to discover the key reason why this district has become such a major attraction for residents and tourists. From rooftop bars to underground clubs, the Meatpacking District is home to nightlife hotspots catering to all types of party people. During the day, the fresh air and pleasant walks of the Hudson River offer the perfect environment for hangover recovery.

As its name suggests, the Meatpacking District was once New York City’s meat production hub. By the 1960s, however, its personality was already beginning to change, as gay clubs began to spring up secretly amid the factories. Visit today and see how this side of the district’s character is no longer confined to the shadows and is now accompanied by a wide range of other cultural features, including a flourishing art scene.

It is easy to spend an entire day here. Start with breakfast at one of the many cafés that draw crowds each morning then explore some of the neighbourhood’s cultural landmarks. Take in cutting-edge contemporary culture at the Whitney Museum of American Art or see if you can spot any famous names from the art or fashion worlds at the trendy Milk Gallery. Afterward, relax as you browse the nearby high-end stores. Smaller stores offer one-off finds.

Choose from both fine dining and laid-back restaurant options for dinner. Finish the evening by heading out to one of the area’s glamorous bars, but be sure to dress the part, as these can be very exclusive.

Reach the Meatpacking District easily via the 14th Street station, just minutes from most of the area’s biggest attractions. Cabs and ride-sharing services are also plentiful in this area, so getting home after a night out is always simple.
