Our ryokan stay was a highlight of our once-in-a-lifetime visit to Japan. The whole property was gorgeous and elegant and the staff were exceptionally friendly, even coming to pick us up after a sightseeing excursion. The onsens, both private and public/outdoor, were amazing and the multi-course dinner and breakfast were outstanding. Highly recommend this stay for a rewarding, authentically Japanese experience.

Absolutely beautiful hotel giving a wonderful ryokan experience with hot springs. The natural scenery is beautiful making you forget you are conveniently less than 5 minutes away from the station. The hotel provides a fancy 10-course meal inspired by traditional Japanese cooking and a similar approach for breakfast. We had a room with a private onsen which was lovely and relaxing but also took a moment to enjoy the shared indoor and outdoor onsens, which are fairly small but also beautiful. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and able to converse with us in English which was convenient for us.

This place is insanely atmospheric. Every little detail was tended to and the place felt lived in and familiar not stuffy. Their dinner was very adventurous for our group but we could have specified fewer things. The kindest staff ever. And a tattoo friendly onsen!

Incredibly attentive staff and a beautiful location. It feels like a hidden gem, and like you were transported into another world. It was such a stark contrast from Tokyo and was a real breath of fresh air. The food was excellent, the room was incredibly comfortable, and the outdoor hot spring was just delightful. This is also one of the few ryokans that is tattoo friendly, which was a big place for us.

This is an elegant and family oriented place. Everyone is so professional and attentive. The vibe is kind and relaxed. The food is delicious and the amenities are incredible. This Ryokan is beautiful. I suggest you get the big room with its own Onsen. It’s totally worth it. And if you have tattoos they are totally fine with it. Excellent experience.

I loved this traditional inn! The service was outstanding and you really felt like you had stepped back in time. The people there take so much pride in ensuring you have a great stay. I loved the peaceful and calm surroundings. Our server in the dining room was amazing.

Staying here is an extraordinary experience, stepping back in time to a ryokan as it was in the 1950s (and almost as it was in 1920). The hospitality is exceptional, the staff attentive and capable, and the room spacious and evocative of an earlier era. Visitors must realize that this means very little in modern conveniences: some rooms don’t have showers and all the rooms are Japanese style with tatami floors and futon beds (set out during dinner and removed during breakfast). There are many stairs, no elevator, and the outdoor shared baths are quite a walk through the (marvelous) garden. The meals are extravagant but totally Japanese. It is an experience not to be missed, but you need to know what you are getting. (The Imperial family apparently stayed here in 1955, the first time the Emperor had ever stayed outside the royal compound.) There many wonderful indoor and outdoor museums around the area, and several fantastic gardens.

Fantastic service

Lovely place! We’ve been traveling around Japan and wanted to spend one night at a traditional ryokan. This place is amazing—the service is outstanding, and the staff truly go out of their way to provide the best experience possible. Highly recommend if you're looking for a classic ryokan.

A very special place

Gora Kansuiro is a really special place. In the heart of nature, with beautiful greenery and onsens - I felt very relaxed. The customer service is incredible and the meals are a really amazing experience. The hotel is very traditional and feels slightly old and musty but this was charming to us. It was very clean and we would definitely stay again.

I was very skeptical after reading some reviews but I am so glad we stayed. Staying Annex of the Ryokan was very much like staying in a historical museum. All the beautiful architectural details against a stunning backdrop of the surrounding gardens. Location is fantastic short walk from Gora station. A very sweet lovely lady whom served our dinner and breakfast, was very welcoming and cheerful leaving us happy with our stay.

Wonderful and beautiful ryokan surrounded by beautiful forest. Great staff with enough english ability to communicate with us. They even helped us forward our luggage to our next location! Also, incredible 8-course kaiseki dinners every night and delicious Japanese breakfasts every morning. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Great combination of traditional with contemporary features, albeit not perfect with either so expect rattling windows with wind, and not many electrical plugs, but just don’t expect perfection and you should be fine. Baths are not huge so i can foresee them getting crowded potentially, but our time was great. The private spa in our suite definitely was a huge plus. Food was excellent, somewhere between traditional and french.

I had very rare experiences to stay in the beautiful place. Kaiseki dinner was absolutely delicious, all staff are very polite and friendly. it smells a bit musty because of the conditions loads are original which was built over 100 years ago.

I ended my 2 week stay in Japan here and it was the best decision ever. The staff treated us with exceptional service. The property was spectacular. I enjoyed the garden and outdoor hot spring! I also had a private bath which I highly recommend. I also had their traditional dinner and breakfast which was amazing. I hope to be back. Thank you.
