Go for a quiet stroll beside the canal or just find a comfortable restaurant and relax after a day exploring in Potsdam or Berlin.

Kleinmachnow is a small town in the state of Brandenburg just outside the Berlin city limits. It lies on the banks of the Teltow Canal and is surrounded by pockets of woods and parkland. Though only a small village before the 1900s, it has several defining features including a castle, church and charming old streets.

In the early years of the 20th century it grew into an affluent commuter town but waned after the First and Second World Wars, eventually becoming part of East Germany. Since the reunification of the country the population has increased and today Kleinmachnow is a prosperous town with excellent restaurants and boutiques.

Wander the streets to spot elegant houses and enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Check out the village church or old mill for quaint old architecture or simply stroll through the woods. Make your way to Machnower See and relax by the water of the lake or head along the canal to find Kleinmachnow Lock.

For a look at one of the town’s most stunning landmarks, visit Hakeburg Castle. The Neo-Romanesque building was constructed between 1906 and 1908 for the von Hake family, but was sold and transformed into a government residence in the lead-up to the Second World War. Under East German rule it became a meeting place for intelligence officials and later a guest house for high-ranking foreign dignitaries.

Once you’ve explored the town, be sure to head to Potsdam. The magnificent city is only nine miles (15 kilometres) from Kleinmachnow and home to some of Germany’s most impressive heritage sites, including the Sanssouci, Orangery and Neues Palais. Partygoers, foodies and fans of urban culture can head to nearby Berlin to experience its top-notch bars and restaurants and underground arts scene.

Kleinmachnow is a quiet town with great little attractions and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s an excellent base from which to explore Potsdam and Berlin, particularly for those who don’t want to lodge amidst the hustle and bustle of the big city.
