"A very excellent experience overall. Staff was spectacular! Our private onsen was fantastic and the room was fine, it actually has softer beds which is a huge difference from other hotels in Japan from my experience. Kaiseki dinner was great, getting greeted with a cup of Yuzu Tea while we wait for check in was also great. I only have one request if you are reading this: be exceptionally nice to the staff. We watched the ladies checking people in get mocked for how they walked in their traditional dress, even though they were going above and beyond to make sure the people staying there were receiving great service. I genuinely felt terrible for them. We will be back one day! We loved our experience "

"We loved the staff and hospitality at Momijiya. My husband said it felt like we were staying at our grandma's house. We loved the ryokan experience as well. We really felt we were getting a more intimate Japanese experience. The food really put us Americans out of our comfort zone, but we wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Our rooms were quaint with nice view, and the comforters on our futons were incredible comfortable. Like sleeping inside a warm cloud. This is a great spot to feel like you're escaping to the mountains but still getting to explore Kyoto during the day."

"The hotel is older but in a very tasteful way. Our room was pleasantly large and had a lovely view of trees and pond. We visited the chashitsu ( tea house) , so elegant. I can't speak of breakfast or dinner both seemed a bit expensive. So we ate at close by places. Enjoyed our time in Kyoto sorry to leave."

"we had an amazing time at Seryo!! the staff was immediately incredibly welcoming and showed us all the amenities and our wonderful room with a perfect garden view. the food was incredible and they even adjusted everything to be vegan for me!! we unfortunately had a less than desired experience at a different ryokan right after our perfect experience at Seryo which just affirmed that Seryo was the right decision!! highly recommend and would love to go back again in the future! "This may be my very favorite hotel of all time. And I only say may to allow for the fact that I may be forgetting something. I can’t imagine, forgetting this. From the moment we arrived from the train station to the moment we sadly departed, every detail was thought of and accounted for. The staff are helpful and discreet, responding to every request as though we had simply asked them the time. This is the only unobtrusive turndown service I’ve ever experienced. . From calling taxis to arranging a Kintsugi experience, to deftly navigating a request to help retrieve some items left in a Tokyo hotel room, everything was absolutely seamless. . Bed was huge and comfortable, pajamas and robes lush, toilet, separate from the shower and private, and an in-room onsen built for two. . The pool is warm and mineral-fed, the grounds are breathtaking, and walking distance to Kinkakuji and some delicious sushi. . If I were forced to make a note, it would be that the Western items on the à la carte breakfast menu were not my favorite. But the buffet was great. . I would come back to Kyoto just to stay here."

While the inn is clearly old, it is immaculately maintained, showcasing a rich history without sacrificing comfort. The location is simply magical. Tucked away from the tourist hustle, the atmosphere is serene, quiet, and peaceful. We truly felt like we were staying in the forest. The property itself is a destination, featuring a gorgeous walking trail that leads along the river and a small path up to a lovely shrine—perfect for a morning hike. Visiting in October meant very few other tourists, making it feel like we had this pocket of nature all to ourselves. The staff are the heart of this place. They are not just excellent; they are caring and incredibly attentive. Their dedication to an excellent guest experience is evident in every detail. They even generously provided a complementary pickup from a local bus stop when we arrived and offer a convenient shuttle service to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the train station for ongoing travel. Speaking of special touches, the complementary breakfast is a highlight—a beautifully presented and delicious cultural experience you won't forget. A special shout-out to Hiroko Hitomi, who runs this establishment. She truly embodies the spirit of Japanese hospitality, ensuring every guest feels genuinely welcome and special. We highly recommend this Ryokan for a peaceful and authentic stay. "
