A visit to this beautiful building provides an insight into the nation’s political life and a look at an architectural masterpiece.

The Congreso de la Nacion Argentina (National Congress) is a must-see for any visitor to Buenos Aires with an interest in experiencing a slice of Argentina’s political history and a passion for architecture.

Following a decade of construction, the National Congress opened in 1906. Built in Greco-Roman style, it displays similarities to well-known edifices from around the world. Stand at the main steps and observe its likeness to Washington’s U.S. Capitol. Gaze up at the bronze figures on the four corners of the building complex, which symbolize victory and peace.

Join a free guided tour to visit a selection of opulent rooms for congressional events. Note the influence of French, German and Spanish decorative styles. Marvel at imposing Corinthian columns and huge chandeliers. Spot bronze statues and look for paintings depicting events in parliamentary history.

Glance inside the horseshoe-shaped Congressional chamber, the setting for legislative decision-making. Visit the Salón Rosada (Pink Room), opened by former first lady and women's rights activist, Eva Perón, as a place where female politicians could convene without the presence of males.

Tours take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Identification is required to enter the building. Bear in mind that some areas may be closed if the senate is in session.

Cross the street to Plaza del Congreso for excellent photo opportunities. In the heart of this square is a monumental fountain called Monumento a los Dos Congresos, decorated with sculptures of angels and animals. Speak to the guard nicely and you might be given permission to enter the gate and walk up the fountain’s steps. While here, stroll to the adjacent Plaza Mariano Moreno to see a sculpture of Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker.

Congreso de la Nacion Argentina stands at the west end of Avenida de Mayo, looking toward Plaza de Mayo. The tree-lined Avenida de Mayo presents a pleasant 25-minute walk between the National Congress and the Casa Rosada. The congress is easily accessible by the metro, public buses and a hop-on, hop-off tourist bus.
