Private guest house on gorgeous 3 acre Hawaiian estate perfect central location.
10/10 Excellent
"Beautiful property with warm and kind hosts. It's clear they have put a lot of care and love into the space. It is so peaceful and full of bird songs at night. We didn't spend too much time at the guest house because we were out adventuring, but it was a relaxing and comfortable space to return to as a home base and is a convenient location to both Hilo and Volcano."
Secluded, spacious new geodesic home on the Big Island, Hawaii.
8/10 Good
"This dwelling is unique, but there's much room for improvement. It is described as "new" (not), and secluded (understatement). We arrived in the DARK after driving a paved, but rough 2 miles from the main road, and were shocked to find an unlit driveway with an industrial-style chain linked fence with warnings posted all over it. We almost left right then, but gave the lock combo a try. The gravel/mud driveway was very rutted and our rented minivan struggled to make it up (in both directions) multiple times. We found out that the home is NOT air conditioned. Although we loved the nature sounds outside at night, the humidity was hard to bear, and there were multiple windows that couldn't be opened. It rained the entire time, which prevented us from using the outdoor spaces at all. The master suite in the upstairs loft was very spacious, but the other bedrooms were small, and our bed was extremely worn and squeaky. The old furniture gave off a musty smell, and the lack of adequate fresh air made my husband's allergies/asthma worse. There is no kitchen table (only a long, high table with 4 stools pushed up against 2 windows which do not open). We were told to "help ourselves" to everything in the fridge, freezer & pantry, but there was an odd amount of assorted leftovers and frozen food inside. It was as if someone had just left, and nothing had been cleaned for us. The fridge handle was crusty and the trashcan on the deck was full (and stunk)! Some bed pillows had no cases!"
Large Home w/ 2 covered Pickleball Courts near Volcano National Park sleeps 16
10/10 Excellent
"Great location for our needs in playing golf at Volcano Golf Course. Also the pickle ball court was perfect for some of our guys. This was our 2nd time at this property, and we always have a great time there. Thank you, Loretta for having us!Hopefull we can do it again next Fathers day 2027.Aloha, Clint"
"Very clean property and well stocked. We did not end up doing any cooking but even though there is no oven / stove, there are plenty kitchen gadgets for doing cooking if needed. We stayed as a home base while visiting Volcano National Park and it was a quick 20ish minute drive to the park entrance. Very nice wrap around Lanai. Feels very remote enjoyed hearing all the wildlife!"
"Please note that you are booking for a unique glamping experience. Things you should know:
- Front gate to the property is open 24/7
- Really nicely designed front yard/path, nothing you’ve ever seen before (I think?)
- Bedroom does not have window panes, just netting; entry door has a key
- Bathroom is outdoor, fully covered
- Dining area is right beside the outdoor shower, fully covered
- Propane BBQ is the only source of heat cooking
- Surrounding feels like a rainforest, with creatures you would expect such as colourful frogs (lots), geckos, bugs of assorted sizes and types, mosquitoes
- It rained both nights we were here, so frogs were loud and mosquitoes were semi-active
- Water filter is provided, though consider bringing your own
Overall, it was an interesting experience. I don’t regret staying here, but I wish I was better informed. This isn’t for everyone, especially if you don’t like bugs."
Convenient comfortable studio in peaceful tropical forest G7
10/10 Excellent
"Think of it as luxury camping and you'll be happy. If your idea of comfort is umbrella drinks by the pool, you will not. Personally, I loved it. But it's not for everyone.
This is a rustic cabin in the jungle. 4.5 miles off the main road, 2.2 miles of it is dirt (well maintained, regular cars not a problem). 15 minute drive to nearest civilization (the part of the description being in the middle of a historic town is inaccurate - it's 7 miles outside a historic town). There are 4 walls, roof (corrugated plastic), lockable door, comfortable bed, private bathroom with hot water. Cleanliness on the level of a well-kept public campground. WIFI and cell service. Electricity to keep your devices charged.
Being what it is, the room gets hot when it's sunny. Chilly at night (they thoughtfully provide 2 blankets on the bed, which during the day make no sense - at night they do). When it rains the roof is LOUD. Every night the coqui frogs are LOUD, and they go all night. You are immersed in nature, but sheltered from it better than in a tent. If this excites you, you'll love it. If it doesn't, this is not for you.
The value for the money is exceptional - some bare camp sites charge more. Highly recommended for those who enjoy camping and want authentic big island experience with better-than-tent comfort."
"The Broken Dog Ranch was better than we expected! It was peaceful, quiet, and felt like home. We were able to relax and get a good night rest after each day of exploring. It was clean and had everything we needed to cook meals. The farm fresh eggs and fruit were a treat and the cows, dogs, and birds were memorable. Our kids loved them all. The owners are great and we wish we could've stayed longer."
