Mixed feelings
We booked this apartment for a week, because we wanted to experience Palermo as locals: shopping in the markets, cooking at home, feeling the local rhythm of life. The location was very good, close enough to the train station and Ballaro market, but just outside the touristy area. The host communicated very well and gave great advice about restaurants in our neighborhood. She also brought better knives when we asked. The apartment was clean and cute and had a proper kitchen (though the dishwasher was out of order). But by the end of the week, it was hard to overlook the negatives. The bedroom is elevated above the main room like a loft. The AC for the bedroom is right above the stairs, meaning that all the cold air drops down the stairs into the main room. We could never get the bedroom to cool off, which made it hard to sleep during the hot summer nights. The bed had an IKEA foam mattress rather than a proper mattress, which did not help either. Also, the shower was TINY. Our elbows would always hit the temperature controls. The bathroom had space for a bigger shower, but they chose 2 sinks and a bidet instead. Lastly, 1 AC plus the tea kettle was enough to blow the fuse for the apartment (twice!). It took us an hour to find the fusebox, which turned out to be outside the apartment in the entry of the building. Summary: good for a short stay, but not so good for a week in summer.
