“The Occidental Lodge is a very charming, old-school lodge that is well-maintained and absolutely spotless. My favorite part was that there were no smells at all in the room, which I loved!The lodge is located in a tiny, quiet town that I would describe as a micro-country town. If you are planning a weekday stay, just keep in mind that the only things open are a little market and a breakfast café that closes at 3:00 PM. “We stayed in the sparrow room. It was incredibly small and filthy. The room was caked in dust and smelled of cigarettes. The temperature regulation was also difficult - we opened the windows to air out the room. However, the windows did not have screens, so the open windows allowed bugs to enter. Madeira House operates much more like an AirBnB than a hotel. There is a contactless check in process without onsite staff. There are also multiple steps of steep stairs that lead from the road……
