Fremantle Prison

Fremantle Prison was constructed during the 1850s. During Australia’s convict era it housed prisoners transported from England and Ireland. In 1886 the jail was handed over to thecolonial authorities to house locally-sentenced prisoners. The prison closed in 1991. Today the historic building is preserved as an internationally recognized World Heritage Site. Theformer prison houses a museum with artifacts and artwork by former prisoners and hosts a range of exciting tours.

Visitors with a spirit for adventure can descend 65 feet (20 meters) below the prison to explore just over half a mile (1 kilometer) of tunnels on foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour or delve into the darker side of the prison's history at night on a spooky Torchlight Tour.

In addition to its guided tours Fremantle Prison also features an interpretive Visitor Centre, on-site cafe, award-winning Gift Shop and exhibitions in the Prison Gallery.

The Fremantle Prison is located13 miles (22 kilometers) south from Perth and is accessible by public transportation. It’s open every day of the year except Good Friday and Christmas Day. Check the website for tour prices and times.

We did the convict tour and found it presented a good concise history of the early use of the gaol. Our guide was brilliant and kept us well entertained over the course of the tour.
