Some of Melbourne’s best designer shopping can be found in this historically affluent inner-city suburb bordered to the north by the winding Yarra River.

Shop, dine and experience premier entertainment in South Yarra, one of Melbourne’s oldest suburban precincts. The suburb is renowned for its designer fashion stores, upmarket boutiques, fantastic dining precincts and large shopping malls. Stroll South Yarra’s tree-lined streets and admire the spectacular mansions and historic estates that earned the suburb its reputation of exclusivity.

South Yarra’s major commercial strips can be found along its two arterial roads, Chapel Street and Toorak Road. On Chapel Street, you’ll find the Jam Factory entertainment complex, as well as several large shopping complexes and malls. Check out the stylish labels in the designer retail stores and refresh your wardrobe with an item from a local Australian designer.

Grab a coffee or sit down to a lavish meal at one of the restaurants and cafés that line South Yarra’s major streets. Try locally roasted coffee and delicious seasonal produce at many of the suburb’s establishments. Join local revellers at South Yarra’s bars and clubs as night falls.

If you want to see some of South Yarra’s architectural treasures, go on a stroll around the leafy residential streets. You’ll see stunning art-deco apartment complexes and splendid Victorian-era mansions. Como House is a historic mansion that is open to the public.

Relax amid the greenery of the Yarra River, which borders South Yarra to the north. The riverside parkland is a great spot to stretch out on the grass and watch rowboats cruising past. From here, you can also join up with the Capital City Trail. This walkway and bicycle track loops around Melbourne’s inner-city suburbs. To the west of South Yarra, you’ll find the spacious greenery of Fawkner Park.

Be sure to check out the neighbouring suburb of Prahran, which features the historic Prahran Market and more excellent shopping.

South Yarra is located 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) southeast of Melbourne’s central business district. It is easily accessible by car, train, tram and bus. Stay in an elegant Victorian-era hotel or take a room in a modern holiday apartment in South Yarra and enjoy being within walking distance of the suburb’s fantastic shopping, cafés and nightlife.
