The room was just OK, it had all the usual amenities: coffee maker, fridge, safe, TV etc.
It's fine if you like your motels from the 1950s (drab brown furnishings and carpets, shower over the small bathtub, etc.) but personally we prefer something more modern.
The problem came at check-in, when I specifically asked why the person on the desk wanted my credit card: whether they wanted to hold it on file or whether a debit would be taken for a security deposit. I was told it would be a hold - and then the woman proceeded to debit $150 from my card. When I queried why she had done this, she started quoting terms and conditions at us. There was a distinct lack of empathy.
Apparently, because we had booked through Expedia, she could not simply hold the card details on file, she had to take a deposit there and then. Being a Monzo card, however, the money was immediately taken out of our account and was then unavailable for spending. We were using the Monzo card during our stay in the US as a convenient way of spending in the local currency and this transaction left us out of pocket.
We have yet to receive a refund, 6 days later, and will raise a dispute with Expedia if we do not receive it soon.
