The ruins of Ostia Antica are not as famous as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum but they are no less glorious. You will find the abandoned city along the Tiber to have incredibly preserved mosaic floors, streets and remnants of homes and theatres. A map is a must if you opt to go on your own. #History

Ostia Antica, just 30 minutes from the Colosseum, offers ancient thrills to rival Pompeii. Ostia, at the mouth of the Tiber River, was founded around 620 B.C.; its central attraction was the salt gleaned from nearby salt flats, which served as a precious meat preserver. Later, around 400 B.C., Rome conquered Ostia and made it a naval base, complete with a fort. By A.D. 150, when Rome controlled all the Mediterranean, Ostia served as its busy commercial port.
Great beach! Perfect place to have a walk in the evening when the sun sets. Awesome view for a romantic time.
