"We stayed in a room with a privet onsen. But still used the public baths. It was amazing no where does hospitality like Japan and this was a wonderful experience of Japanese hospitality."
"Pros +. Super close to the Hakone train station, natural onsen, extremely friendly service, multiple restaurant options, large rooms
Consideration: property is very dated and in need of a reno. Not run down but dated decor"
"Perfect hotel for our stay in Hakone!
The check in was easy and they not only held our bags until check in (5pm), but when we got back they had taken them to our rooms!
They provide face masks, eye masks, facial products, and hair products free of charge.
The bus stop is right across the street and the train station is a five minute walk.
Our only complaint was lack of a breakfast option because everything around is closed in the morning until 11 am. Wasn’t a huge deal as we just hoarded fruit from 7/11 for the morning.
We did not have the roof onsen option, but we were both able to fit in the shower onsen and did that every night."
"That’s a more authentic review if the food wasn’t actually a highlight for your family:
We stayed at Shiunso Ryokan as a family with two young children and overall had a pleasant experience.
The ryokan is definitely an older property and shows its age in some areas, but it has a traditional atmosphere that many travelers may appreciate. The staff were welcoming, and the stay gave us an opportunity to experience a classic Japanese ryokan.
One of the biggest advantages of this location is its convenience. It is within walking distance of Tonosawa Station, although the route involves a short uphill walk. We found it to be a good base for exploring Hakone and completing the Hakone Loop using public transportation.
Our children especially enjoyed sleeping on futons in the tatami room and exploring the ryokan grounds. The stay itself felt unique and memorable for them.
The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were an interesting cultural experience, but the food was not our family’s favorite part of the stay. That said, we appreciated the opportunity to try traditional Japanese ryokan cuisine.
Overall, Shiunso is a solid choice for travelers looking for a traditional Hakone ryokan with convenient access to transportation. While the facilities are somewhat dated, the location, atmosphere, and family-friendly experience made for an enjoyable stay."
"Absolutely loved our stay here. We had a private onsen for our family, which was a big hit with our daughters.
The men's public onsen was very quiet, in multiple visits I did not encounter another guest."
