Bellrigg - a house that sleeps 8 guests in 4 bedrooms
Bellrigg is a spacious, traditional detached farmhouse in a tranquil, rural location providing excellent holiday accommodation for families and groups of up to 8. The house has open views over neighbouring farmland to the high hills of Galloway, and the garden is visited by a variety of wild and bird life.
With extensive gardens, its own Tennis Court, a Billiard Table and a Baby Grand Piano, there is plenty to keep everyone entertained without having to leave the house. However, although in a rural location, Bellrigg is less than a 10-minute drive from Castle Douglas. The small, rural market town is known as the ‘Food Town' offering a wide range of amenities. These include a range of interesting independent shops, art galleries, a community run theatre which doubles as a cinema, cafes, restaurants & pubs, a swimming pool, a 9-hole golf course, and a small independent brewery.
Centrally located in the superb outstanding scenic area of South West Scotland including the Solway Coast Bellrigg is perfectly situated for enjoying the outstanding sandy beaches and cliff top walks within a 20-minute drive. Water sports are available on the Solway and also on nearby Loch Ken at the Galloway Activity Centre. Fishing is available locally, whether it be Game, Course or Sea fishing. The National Trust for Scotland's Threave Estate is on the doorstep where the House and surrounding gardens offer an oasis of tranquillity. The Estate offers the chance to see Ospreys at work in the summer months and Threave Castle which is located on an island surrounded by the river Dee. For the naturalist there are a number of Core Paths around Threave Estate which offer fascinating views of the surrounding countryside and wetlands, with the Red Kite Trail also close to the town and slightly further afield are the nationally important wildfowl reserves of Mersehead and Caerlaverock.
Nearby Kirkcudbright with its working harbour and local fishing fleet is a short drive away. Known as ‘The Artist Town' due to its connections to the ‘Glasgow Boys' and Girls', the town is a thriving centre for arts and crafts and is home to numerous private galleries and the public Kirkcudbright Galleries which hosts a wide range of exhibitions. The town is also home to the Dark Sky Gin Distillery, next to which you will discover the Dark Sky Planetarium, a state of the art, interactive space themed experience which is well worth a visit and learn about our night skies. If History is your thing the NTS property Broughton House home of the artist E.A Hornel along with its Japanese inspired garden is located on the High Street, with MacLellan's Castle holding court over the town. The Summer Festivities Committee run a full and varied programme of events throughout most of the year including a Jazz Festival, popular Scottish Nights, a Tattoo, Country Fair and an Arts & Crafts trail throughout the summer months and a Fringe Festival and a Festival of Light held in the autumn.
With this being Scotland, golf is never far away and numerous 18-hole courses are within easy reach including the challenging Southerness links course. Sections of the Forestry Scotland 7 Stanes Mountain Bike Trails are easily accessible, the nearest being in Dalbeattie, with Kirroughtree near Newton Stewart and both Ae and Mabie near Dumfries within easy reach by car.
For the younger generation, Ernespie Farm offers both indoor and outdoor play areas along with a café with delicious offerings for all ages. Slightly further afield is The Cocoa Bean Chocolate Factory which has both indoor & outdoor play areas and offers Chocolate Making workshops; Cream o' Galloway where you can partake of their renown ice cream, wander around their nature trails, or participate in an Ice Cream making workshop; The Wee Pottery and the Dark Sky Planetarium in Kirkcudbright or a visit to Dumfries with numerous connections to Rabbie Burns, the national baird which can be found around the area are ideal for the days with inclement weather.
