Reading Whitchurch Maze Hotels

"This is my second time staying here and has always been very good. It was still good, but I was disturbed alot by the neighbour next door talking incredibly loudly on his phone. Also, I would have liked to not receive an email the day before I am due to check out, asking me to check out online. I think it takes away from your experience of being away if it feels like the hotel is rushing you to check out. "

"The property is lovely, scenic in beautiful surroundings. We stayed in a comfy double room for 1 night which was fine and we appreciated the amenities in the room (iron/ironing board, bottled water etc). It was generally clean, with some minor points. The soundproofing isnt great as you could hear people in the corridor and the neighbouring room but thankfully it was a peaceful night. The staff were friendly and overall it is a nice Hotel and I would stay again. We were dissappinted that breakfast was unavailable in the morning as it was fully booked. We did ask the day before and were told there was no need to book and to just go to the restaurant in the morning. We understand it was Mothers Day that morning but we should have been told to book a table for breakfast. The fact that we were hotel guests didnt mean anything. "

"Great location and beautiful garden with views across the hills. Spotlessly clean and well maintained with all the things you may need for your holiday. The caretakers were very friendly and helpful and cared about us and the property with pride. Local supermarkets, petrol station and IKEA were only a mile down the road plus a five minute walk from the property was a pub serving food and an excellent fish n chips shop! Buses into town from outside the chippy were every 10 minutes or sooner!"

"The host never responded to any text or chat messages from us once we were given his contact details three days prior to the booking. There was no email address only a mobile phone with no voice mail available to leave a message. Neither did he respond to any emails sent by Vrbo support. Vrbo did not have any additional information about the property apart from that on the website and did not allow the booking to be cancelled until we actually arrived at the property despite the complete lack of communication from the host. We arrived at the property and were unable to gain access.The neighbours had never heard of the host, his name was unknown to them as an owner of the property. It has not been available to rent for some time. It is advertised as a house but it is a downstairs apartment/flat. Added to which it was surrounded by scaffolding. We immediately rang Vrbo support who cancelled the booking and arranged an immediate refund of our money. We then had to find, at very short notice, alternative local accommodation as we needed to be in the immediate area that night to be near a relative. The whole experience was stressful since we were away from home prior to the start of the booking and were travelling a considerable distance with no information or assurance about the property and its access, since there was no communication from the host and Vrbo were unable to do anything about this. "The area around the property is magnificent. The property itself is very nice. The owner was very friendly and helpful. The only concern I have is in regard to safety in case of a fire. The amenities are upstairs and the stairs are quite narrow. An older person would have extreme difficulty getting down and the windows do not appear to be an option. Maybe there were other options but I didn’t see any. "
