We enjoyed sharing in the history of the property. The house is beautifully restored, and the gardens are lovely. Great care was taken by the owner which included large bouquets of flowers throughout the house.

Amazing Stay with Antonio!

Everything about our stay was great. Antonio had flawless pre arrival communication, allowed us an early checkin (which was much appreciated after an overnight flight) and welcome light breakfast was extremely hospitable. The property itself was as advertised and perfect for three active people. The setting and all the amazing gardens that are so well loved allowed for a peaceful and tranquil setting each day. Highly recommend this amazing property to all.

Beautiful place!

Antonio was so friendly, the food and snacks left to greet us were such a nice surprise! And best of all- the place was so beautiful in such a convenient location!

Charming place within its own botanical garden!

The perfect place to relax and to discover this wonderful island! The apartment is spacious, comfortable, well-equipped and very peaceful. We enjoyed the inside (especially the wonderful wintergarden) as well as the outside (you feel like you are in a botanical garden!) very much ... also on rainy days! The owner Antonio - who lives upstairs - is lovely, very helpful and was very considerate and respectful of our privaty. The communication was always perfect and we were even surprised by a wonderful welcome package as well as fresh eggs during the week! The location in the middle of the island is perfect to explore the island. Free parking is available directly in front of the house. Grocery stores are available in the little city. A wonderful place which we can recommend and would love to come back to!

Perfect getaway oasis

Our stay at Antonio's place was a dream. It was quiet with a wonderful garden (and some lovely chickens!). Antonio was so welcoming and attentive to anything we needed. We 100% recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet place to rewind after a busy day exploring the island

The beautiful Vila Alegre

A charming homey stay in a restored vila. The gardens are endless and lush, planted and lovingly cared for by Antonio. This was our refuge after 2 weeks of travel in urban Portugal. It refreshed us, body and soul. Will come back!

Beautiful island and accommodation

Wonderful stay at Antonio’s. He is so kind and caring! We loved his flat with morning chickens coming to greet us at our door! Lots of room in the flat and it is full of charm and authenticity.Antonio's is close to all of the islands attractions! Hope to return again some day!

Beautiful place!

Antonio was so welcoming and gave us tons of tips on where to go in the Azores. The property had everything we needed from washer to dishwasher and he had left us local food to try after the long plane ride. The location was in a small town but we easily drove to destinations all over the island. And the garden is beautiful!

Loved every minute of our stay!

From the moment we arrived and Antonio greeted us, it was perfect! He was such a kind man and we loved hearing about the gardens and enjoyed spending time sitting on the sun porch overlooking the beautiful property. The local foods he provided were delicious and were very much appreciated until we could get to a store. The apartment was spacious and immaculate…and decorated beautifully. Location couldn’t be better to get anywhere on the island. Thank you for a fantastic vacation and we hope to be able to return soon!

Beautiful villa on spectacular grounds

The property is the first floor of a restored villa on utterly amazing grounds. We loved the glassed in porch off the bedroom, which gave us a beautiful view of the gardens. The house has everything you need, including a full kitchen. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and recommend it highly.

Wonderful experience great place!

My family loved our stay! Antonio and Maggie were the best hosts. Great reception with fruit and other goodies upon arrival. Their knowledge of the island provided great recommendations for us. Five night stay was way to short to see the beauty of Sao Miguel and explore Antonio’s amazing gardens. Can’t wait to return to Antonio’s!

Paradise in Capelas

Vila Alegre was an absolute dream! Beautiful home w/ gorgeous gardens and a very kind host who is flexible and accommodating. All the comforts of home with beautifully curated antique furnishings made the home feel as special as it is. The ideal picture of a Portuguese Vila! We enjoyed staying here so much and was the perfect home base for all of our Sao Miguel adventures. Can't wait to return!

Incredible garden oasis

Wonderful Home

Antonio’s home was perfect in every way. The location was easy to drive to all parts of Sao Miguel. The apartment was larger than the photos show and fully equipped for all needs. Antonio was helpful, gracious and easy to contact if we had any questions. He greeted us with flowers from his beautiful garden and food from the Azores. I especially loved sitting in the sun room every morning with my coffee. Highly recommend!!

Wonderful Stay

Thank you Antonio for a wonderful stay in your family villa! We felt welcome and at home our entire stay. We appreciate the extra touches (snacks, welcome beverage) that made us feel like old friends instead of just visitors. The layout of the suite is extremely spacious and gives one total privacy. The grounds are beautiful and very relaxing. We were able to use the Vila Alegre as a home base for visiting the entire North and West sides of Sao Miguel. We highly recommend Vila Alegre for anyone visiting Sao Miguel, who is looking for an alternative to a typical hotel and wants to live in the community in a luxurious setting.

Wonderful stay

Just returned yesterday from the beautiful island of Sao Miguel. This was our third trip and once again it did not disappoint. I can’t give Antonio enough praise for making it so enjoyable! From the treats that were left for us to enjoy to the sunroom where we had our morning coffee and a glass of wine at night, he made sure we were comfortable after returning from a day of sightseeing. We always looked forward to feeding the chickens in the morning before heading out to enjoy our day. The gardens are impeccably maintained and fun to walk around and discover new things. The villa is centrally located on the island and it makes it so easy to travel. Thank you, Antonio…we hope to return someday soon to visit! Don’t hesitate to book the villa!

Retreat in Paradise

We very much enjoyed our stay in this spacious suite just outside the town of Capelas. It is a great location to explore the island. Easy access to the south side of the island as well as the North. Capelas is a short 3 minute drive where there is a grocery store and bakery. The suite has a fully equipped kitchen and is furnished with beautiful antiques. It was incredibly comfortable and quiet, and we loved the sun room. This space, with floor to ceiling windows, slides open to a beautiful, well-loved garden. It was wonderful to have breakfast each morning looking out to this tropical paradise. We hope to be back again to experience tranquility in nature once again. Thank you Antonio for opening your beautiful home.

Highly recommended: Excellent accommodations and superb host

My husband and I stayed at Vila Alegre for 14 days and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The place is definitely as described and reviewed---a peaceful oasis. Antonio was a superb host, being very attentive to our needs yet respectful of privacy. Went above and beyond with the extras (breakfast goodies, fresh fruit, wine), arranged the payment of our parking ticket from Vila Franco do Campo (watch out for metered parking there), and dried our clothes the last night so we didn't have to bring home wet items. Thank you, Antonio! Capelas is very centrally located to all island activities without the traffic and congestion of Ponta Delgada. However, driving can be quite challenging with the narrow roads and slow-moving farm equipment. So just drive defensively. All in all a great place to stay, and I'd highly recommend it.

Just perfect

This appartment is close to Ponta Delgada and has a convenient location to all the important attractions of the island. The suite is beautifully furnished, it has quite a large living room and bedroom, a modern kitchen (dishwasher...) and a tastefully decorated bathroom. We loved the flowers that António placed throughout the house. However our favourite place was the glass sunroom overlooking the beautiful garden. António was a perfect host, super friendly and very helpful. He welcomed us with a basket of fruit and bread, with cheese from Sao Jorge, wine from Pico and with other local specialities. Additionally we could find a lot of condiments (oil, salt etc.) in the kitchen. My husband and I loved this appartment. Thank you so much António for the wonderful stay in Vila Alegre!

Absolutely Wonderful!

From the moment of arrival and till the moment of departure, our stay with António was perfect! The house and the garden are even more beautiful than the pictures show. We were quite overwhelmed by the fantastic flowers in big vases in every room, even in the kitchen. And the fridge was full of good things for our first breakfast - which was very considerate, because we arrived around midnight because of a changed flight schedule. António picked us up at the airport! What a service! Everything in the house functioned to perfection, and the bed is delightful. António helped with everything we needed help for and offered to do more, such as giving us interesting ideas about his homeland. We had some good talks and enjoyed a bit of laughing together, having more or less the same sense of humour, although we are from Scandinavia and António from 'the middle of the Atlantic Ocean'. Our stay on that beautiful island, São Miguel, was only just long enough to make it clear to us that we need to go back soon, and then, of course, we will stay in Vila Alegre again! Thank you, António!

Garden Villa Enjoyment

It may take a long review but I will try to be succinct. First, Antonio is exceptionally gracious and hospitable. He introduced my husband and I to food specific to Sao Miguel. Oh the bread, cheese and pineapple are delicious. Antonio was generous to stock the frig with milk, eggs, cheese, bread, pineapple, coffee, and other staples. He helped to guide us to shopping, dining, and touring in his community. Second, his home was like staying in a fairytale. The villa was beautiful and authentic to the culture. It was spacious. Much bigger than the pictures. Very clean and comfortable. It was stocked with all the necessities like being home. Lastly, the garden was beautiful and much larger than imagined. My husband and I enjoyed exploring the gardens, plants and trees. We chuckled with the baby chicks running around. In conclusion, my husband and I are so happy we stayed at this garden villa. With meeting Antonio, we feel we have a new friend or extended family in Sao Miguel. We definitely recommend this villa to friends, family, or anyone considering this VRBO option. Enjoy!

Nous avons passé un agréable séjour chez Antonio. Nous avons apprécié grandement revenir à la Vila après une longue journée de randonnée. Antonio travaille très fort sur son terrain et c'est pour cela qu'il y a une grande variété de fleurs. Egalement, à notre arrivée nous avions plus que l'essentiel pour un petit délicieux déjeuner. Les charmantes poules qui se promènent sur le terrain nous ont fournis d'excellent œufs. Merci Antonio pour ton accueil chaleureux! Au plaisir de séjourner à nouveau à la Vila Alegre.
