Surviving section of the medieval town wall of Chepstow, Monmouthshire, Wales. A nearby plaque reads: "The wall that defended the mediaval town of Chepstow has been called the Portwall for many years. It was apparently planned and built as a whole by order of Roger Bigod, fifth Earl of Norfolk, during the period 1272-1278. About two-thirds of the original length of 1123 metres still survives. . . . The wall now appears smaller as the ground level has risen by about 2m, there was also a defensive ditch in front of the wall."

Only six of these historic bridges remain in operation, and the Newport Bridge is the longest with a 196m span (645ft). Lovely staff, lovely entrance, lovely grounds and lovely comfy beds. Lost a star (would have been half a star if possible) unfortunately due to the ladies spa room as there were a number of maintenance issues and generally felt a little tired and worn out. Appreciated having the facility available ...

It was only a short 10 minute walk to central Newport and if you walk 5 more minutes you will be at the bus station which will take you everywhere you need to go.
