“When we arrived I thought I was at the wrong place, it looked like an army barracks. From the pictures I was hoping for a key west vibe.. not so much, opened the door to our 2 bedroom suite in the first floor, facing the pool and immediately hit the bed with the door. The room was extremely small. Leftover food in the mini fridge, toilet had no water to flush, wet left and at least the 2 girls that were there were very nice and the maintenance guy/ desk clerk/ maybe manager did show us……

“Upon checkin the front desk gal charged me $50 more than my Expedia reservation, when I asked why, she stated the room rates where $269 a night, I said don't you have to honor the Expedia rate, and at first she acted like no, then when I showed her the reservation, she then changed her tune and stated it was a $25 security deposit per night, that would go towards my $75 pet fee. Unbelievable. The washcloths and hand towels are hidden in a drawer that I couldn't see until we where getting……

“I really enjoy the character of historic hotels. I think they are neat if well kept up, and Historic Hotel Nichols did not disappoint. It was in walking distance to the lake/pier. There was free parking very close by and we were able to take advantage of parking in front of the hotel, but there were limitations. This property is over 140 years old, but is very well kept up. “There is no lake view in a room that said it was lake view. It was clean. The king-size bed was beyond terrible. It was like 2 twins pushed together with a very lumpy mattress topper. No closet. Very tiny room. The hand sink was in the bedroom. The house was built in 1883, if it had been haunted it might have been worth the $250. It was neither haunted or worth the $250. ”

“This hotel was the cheapest rate we found for a newer hotel. The sweetness of the deal did not last as long as living with a budget hotel. The pro’s: the staff was nice, our tv worked the first two days, we loved having the mini fridge and microwave in the room. We asked a staff member what we should see in Benton Harbor.
