Fort Matanzas National Monument was built in 1742 to defend Spanish St. Augustine from the British, nearly 300 years ago.

Fort Matanzas has a very long & interesting history, closely connected with the founding of St. Augustine by Pedro Menendez de Aviles. In 1565, Menendez murdered over 250 French Protestants including the famed Jean Ribault, on the land where the Fort is today. Due to the history of the site, the Spanish named both the fort and the inlet "Matanzas," which means "slaughters" in English. That name carries on to this day.

「The house was a great experience. Loved the easy process and location. The only negative is that we found 3 pretty good size live roaches and some ants. We used the spray under the sink. Other than that, it was awesome. 」

「The house was clean and convenient, and we enjoyed it. Check-in was difficult because I went to the front door but no keypad entry. I went around back, inside a fence, had a cottage and a back door to choose from. Finally found the right entrance, unmarked. More directions would have been nice! Communication from the owner was awful.」
