Sapporo Hotel Guide

By Japanese standards, Sapporo is a brand new city. The capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo sprouted in 1857 and grew into Japan’s northern metropolis of over 2 million people. The city’s newness is readily apparent to those who have visited ancient Kyoto or sprawling Tokyo – you won’t find many of the winding narrow byways which pass for roads in Osaka. Instead, Sapporo’s planned design allows for wide, tree-lined boulevards and an easy-to-navigate street grid. Whether you visit in the summer to experience one of the legendary Sapporo Beer Gardens, or in the winter to take in the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival, navigating the city’s streets is a breeze.

As a former Winter Olympics host city, Sapporo and its surrounding area are replete with winter sport facilities to be enjoyed year-round. Sapporo makes a great base to visit nearby ski resorts such as Niseko. But why leave the city at all when there are six different ski resorts within Sapporo’s borders? Select from the Mount Moiwa Ski Resort, Sapporo Bankei Ski Area, Fu’s Snow Area, Sapporo Teine, Sapporo Kokusai Skiing Resort or the Takino Suzuran Hillside Park Snow World. Of course, these facilities cator to outdoor enthusiasts year-round, offering mountain biking, hiking, camping, and other activities during the spring, summer, and fall.

Sapporo Hotels and Accommodations

Sapporo is both a pleasure and business destination, and as such has an expansive range of hotels and accommodations to select from. Budget and business hotels can be found in spades around the major stations, such as Sapporo and Odori Stations. The Comfort Hotel Sapporo and Hotel Sapporo Mets are solid mid-range options, and if you want to taste a bit of the high life, you can always indulge in the Washington Hotel One or the iconic Sapporo Grand Hotel, dating from 1934 and chock-full of art deco touches.

Your Sapporo Experience

Sapporo cuisine is well-known and well-liked throughout Japan – do not miss your chance to savor grilled hairy crab (kegani) with a side of miso ramen. Dairy is also more common up north, with many delectable local cheeses, butters, and ice creams to sample. Genghis Khan – grilled mutton – is also a local specialty.

Any traveler to Japan will quickly learn the importance of omiyage – souvenirs –to bring back for family and friends. Sapporo’s most popular omiyage is Shiroi Koibito (“White Lovers”), a scrumptious treat made from wafers and chocolate, and makes the perfect gift to bring back with you.
