“The staff made the entire trip special. Juan & Luisa, the owners of the Phoenix Restaurant are incredibly friendly. There was no hot water however, so just be prepared for that. The views can not be beaten in Fortuna. You oversee the lake and the volcano and the property is full of beautiful plants, flowers and wildlife. Make sure to rent an suv or something with off road capabilities because to get to the hotel you have to trek up a gravel road up hill. But it’s worth every second of it. The……

“The Retreat is gorgeous. The views of the Volcano and Lake are amazing. The pescatarian menu is perfect for vegetarians and pescatarians. All three meals are served. We did not have meals included but very much enjoyed dinner and breakfast there. The pocket sized gathering places are charming - slider over looking lake, dining room and reception, the separate lounge area with tea and coffee looking into the jungle. The evening walk was fun. The property is on the top of a very steep hill……

“Lovely self sustaining eco resort in the midst of the forest. We loved the food, the coziness of the cabin, the yoga classes, and wandering around the property. The farm tour and the night tour were fun activities to do with a 4 year old. We did not like: occasional smell of sewage around the property, especially around the pools. Dated bathrooms in cabins - needs a refresh. Construction noise around the property. ”

“If you want to disconnect in luxury with incredibly attentive staff, this is the place to be. The property is a true sanctuary, peaceful and private, everything is spotless and new, and the service was exceptional throughout our stay. “We had a great stay at Fortuna Retreat. Only notes would be that the room could be a bit cleaner (in the corners of the bathroom, behind furniture) and the view from the ground floor rooms is not as advertised- you can’t get a clear view of the volcano. Otherwise the staff were amazing, the pool was lovely and the grounds were extremely well kept with beautiful greenery.”

“My husband and I stayed at Chongos place for 3 nights, it actually looks better in person than the pictures. They have made some updates and it’s completely fenced with parking available if you have a car. You can see the Arenal Volcano from the property but it was hard to see it completely since the clouds are always around it, we were able to see it a little better on our last day. There are 3 cabins that they rent and the owners have their house also in the same lot. Diana is very responsive……

“Incredible property. Exactly as pictured. If you’ve ever been on a 5 star African safari this is the Costa Rican equivalent. Only disappointment was our room didn’t have a volcano view as pictured but the room was incredible nonetheless and the main dining and pool area had a great view of the volcano. ”
