In the summer, the river is a popular swimming and festival spot for San Franciscans. In the winter, the Pacific keeps the climate mild, perfect for whale watching.

We provide a map of stunning, lesser-known scenic drives to the coast, where you can walk the beaches with sea lions, watch for whales, or surf. The landmark Sonoma Coast State Park and Goat Rock are at the mouth of the river, where you can walk the beach and visit the sea lions that usually lounge where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean.
