  • Hever Castle was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII. The castle went through a number of owners since the Boleyn family after passing to the Crown on the death of Anne's father, Thomas Boleyn . In 1903 it was acquired by William Waldorf Astor, an American millionaire, who restored it in Tudor style using, as far as possible, the same tools as Tudor craftsmen. The extensive castle grounds are beautiful in summer, and include a rose garden which is lovely in full bloom.

Definitely worth a visit for history-lovers and nature-lovers alike. Highlights include Anne Boleyn's bedroom and the collection of portraits of Henry VIII and his six wives.

Overall a lovely stay

We had a cozy stay at Bertie Cottage. Lovely feel with the fireplace too. The cottage was well equipped. Arrival was a bit unclear, it would be helpful to have the name of the cottage on the back gate, as we arrived late afternoon and it was already dark. The pictures sent beforehand of the street were blurry and unclear (in the end a neighbor needed to help us find it and even she found it difficult to define which it was). The floors squeak a lot and you literally can hear the neighbors talk, but that’s the vibe of an old house. I’d probably get a bit more comfier bed that doesn’t make a sound if you turn considering it all. Overall we had a lovely stay and if you take the above into account I would recommend it to others.

Elegant cosy cottage

We had a lovely three night stay with our young son - it was a really calm, elegant space and the log burner was absolutely perfect on the colder nights. The lovely Piglet bedding was gorgeous and made it super cosy. We were so close to lots of great places, including a few mins drive from Bodiam Castle and a great farm shop (eggs and apples) for supplies, so it was a brilliant base for exploring. I’d recommend parents bring a pop up blackout blind if possible for the children’s room as the curtains in both bedrooms are almost sheer. Do take note of the instructions when you arrive: you need to enter through the back door which acts as the front door during your stay. The front door stays locked. That confused us when we arrived!
